help me please. i am running Me which came with my computer. i downloaded ie6 and it is a nightmare. it takes FOREVER to log on to internet and outlook express.
ie6 CANNOT be uninstalled. i would give my left testicle to go back to ie5.5.
I had horrible problems with Microsoft Windows XP on my Dell Dimension 4100. It was a disaster on my system. Unstable, ugly, unreliable. Corrupted my applications. Wouldn’t launch…
You may try to correct any problem with IE6. I also have ME and I downloaded IE6, and had many error messages and other weird things for awhile. To to Add/Remove and click on IE6 and remove. You will then get options and one of them is to repair IE6. Try that.
Short of reformatting, you may also try to download Opera. It’s free if you don’t mind the ads, but you may want to download it so you can remove IE entirely. You cannot go back to an earlier version, but you can remove it. After you remove it, you can then download IE5 or IE5.5 and also remove Opera, if you like. I believe the website for Opera is www.Opera.com
i keep start up as clean as i can, just basic stuff in there. this all started when i upgraded to ie6.
the idea that you can not uninstall ie6 is the nightmare here. i realize i can reformat the whole computer but that would be a last resort. ie6 can not be removed and you can’t go back to ie5, i already tried.
from what i have been told one solution is to upgrade to xp but that is just microsoft sucking me in once more. everyone tells me Me is unstable then i find out it is not compatible with ie6 AFTER i download it.
If installing IE6 is the only thing you have changed lately, you could try using the system restore thingy. I don’t have Windows ME, so I’m not certain that’s what it is called, but its in with all the other system tools.
It peridodically keeps a record of how your computer is set up, and you can tell it to go back to that. I’m not sure if it uninstalls programs, but it could be worth a try.
I am using Windows ME and IE 6, and had problems when I first upgraded. In fact the first post that I made to this board, after lurking for over a year, was looking for help with this problem. There was no help to be had here, but after much hand wringing and head banging I found the culprit. It was a dll file named FT app, that was installed by a program call Morephius that my teenage stepson had installed. If you have this file on your computer disable it it should help your problem.
Your best choice is to dump both. Get a copy of Mandrake Linux, install that and use either Konqueror or Mozilla to surf the Web.
But if you must have Windows it is much better for you to, eh, downgrade to W98. Beware, though, there is no way to remove any version of IE once you put it in.
I’m not quite sure I understand why IE 6 can’t be removed. I just checked to make sure on my system and it’s listed in “Add/Remove Programs” in the control panel. I didn’t actually run the removal process, as I’m perfectly happy with it at the moment, but it certainly shows removal as an option.
Before doing this, I would highly recommend downloading the browser you plan to use to replace it. It can be a pain to get browser software if you don’t have browser software.
well i posted a message here but something got lost or deleted. what i said was i am not a computer expert but ie6 adds something to (i think) the registry and this prevents it from being removed.
yes the uninstall is listed for ie6 but when you try it you get a message that you can not uninstall.
