It’s a lot older than that. Viagra wasn’t marketed until 1998. Tom Waits used the expression in Pasties and a G-String on his Small Change album of 1976. I doubt it originated with him.

It was developed originally as a treatment for high blood pressure and angina. While it proved of little use for treatment of heart disease, men using it reported increased erections. This led to its current use to treat erectile disfunction.
The main effect is to allow greater blood flow to the penis. But if your blood flow is already adequate, it’s not going to do a lot more.
If blood flow is already adequate, Viagra will do little to increase it. Studies of recreational use have found little effect. Since erections have significant psychological component, any improvement may be due to placebo effects.
Most importantly, Viagra won’t increase your libido. If you don’t feel like having sex, it won’t make you hornier.

Correct. For some reason people think that if a man takes a Viagra, he will immediately get a rock hard erection that can bust rocks into gravel. It says in the instructions that you must be sexually aroused for it to work.
That being said, I may or may not have used it recreationally in the past. In my experience, it makes the erection more firm and longer lasting, much like the erections you got when you were 16 years old, but when you are done, so to speak, that’s it. It is not some pill that will let you have sex for days on end.
