I was talking with a friend and he said that although he doesn’t need it, he sometimes takes ED medication. When I asked him why he took something he didn’t need he said that it gave him a different feeling. I don’t think you can get ED drugs without a prescription, but apparently he told the doctor that he needed it and was able to get a prescription easily.
So my question is, does taking ED medication when you don’t need it cause any short or long term health problems, besides any published side effects? I wanted to tell him that I thought it was a bad idea to take ANY drug you don’t need but I needed to give him a reason why it’s a bad idea in this case.
I was watching a show about an openly gay comedian who had died and they found amyl nitrite in his blood. That got me thinking.
Whenever I hear about ‘poppers’ it’s always in reference to gay sex, not that there is anything wrong with gay sex. Are poppers also used for straight sex, and if so, why do we never hear about it in that context?
1 - though I never used it I have been ‘in theory’ offered ED drugs by a ‘theoretical’ pharmacist, to enhance my pleasure, I never accepted nor verified if his offer was real or just in jest as I assume it is illegal for such a offer to be made.
2 - There are some things such as nitroglycerine that has been known to cause erections to such personnel as EMS, I don’t know how chemical induces erections equated to sexual performance. I have heard accounts of applying it it other areas and causing episodes of passing out due to blood vessel dilation and resultant loss of blood pressure.
I just asked my doctor for a prescription because I just wanted to try it and he just went ahead and wrote one out. Of course he knows my medical condition and knew I wasn’t taking any nitro tablets but he just didn’t really get worked up over writing the script. And yes it works, sometimes too good; you can really wear a girl down by taking that stuff. Seriously, the worst side effect is not being able to climax in a normal amount of time and pissing off your partner who gets to feeling like an exercise machine at the gym.
I’d have to see a cite that Viagra abuse rendered Hugh deaf. He is pretty old anyway so he could just be going deaf from old age.
I’ve wondered this myself (for a friend, of course ). I thought that Viagra et. al. only helped produce the proper turgidity, not changing the sensitivity. Does it also have an effect on performance?
I recall an article about someone who tried a prescription for some antidepression drug (Prozac? Was it in Wired?). He had a throwaway line about the possible side effect, that contrary to locker room humour - “delayed orgasm or inability to reach orgasm is no fun. That’s all I’m going to say.”. He didn’t elaborate, but from my (very very) limited experience, failure to launch is no fun after a while.
In general drugs don’t do any more harm to someone that doesn’t have the condition than it does to someone who “needs” it. For example - pain killers don’t “know” you are in pain and then fix it - they have a certain effect on whatever system in the body. It doesn’t magically kill you or hurt you if you aren’t in pain.
This isn’t probably always true for something like when you are low on something - like medication for low blood pressure. In cases like that - the drug might be adding something to your BP - and could take you up into dangerous levels.
I notice this is a wide spread believe, but it isn’t true. I used to do medical tests as a guinea pig and people were SURE that I was going to die or something when I was on stuff like anti-malarial drugs (but didn’t have malaria). They even test female birth control pills on men.
ED isn’t a yes or no thing - it is a spectrum. Most people will experience harder erections on Viagra than they will without. I’m guessing that 9 out of 10 guys would notice a difference. It makes it look bigger too (small effect - but noticeable - and I don’t need to hear theories on this being placebo - it isn’t).
Some guys also can lose an erection after a certain period of time - it helps with that as well.
Other than some drug interactions - Viagra is relatively harmless. I hear from people that want it, but are afraid their doc isn’t going to give it to them. I think they think there is an objective test for it or something. If you tell your doc you have ED - he might as a few questions - but none of them are to see if you are faking it. Doctors are there to help you.
Many antidepressants do have this effect - and if you have issues with premature ejaculation - doctors use them off label for exactly that purpose. The idea being with the proper dose - you can make it more difficult to orgasm, but hopefully not overly so.
I went through a period where I experienced that and the writer is right. It’s like getting all the way up to just almost at the peak of orgasm… almost… almost… nope, head back down the hill and start climbing again. Eventually you’re thinking that you’ve had some fun and it felt good and maybe you can just call it done now. (Which I suppose is an idea that may be more familiar to women.)
For me, it wasn’t related to any medication*, but it was a period when I was dealing with a lot of back issues. *I was only taking Tylenol and naproxen, which have never had that effect on me before or sense, so I blame the back.
I am 65 yrs old, I can’t say I need it but on special occassions I bring it along. It makes you harder and longer and thicker. Kind of like taking 20 years off your age. I have also experienced problems where if I held back I might loose the erection because I am getting tired or not quite as excited as I should be, cialis will get me right over those humps. 1/2 pill will enhance performance from friday night until monday and I can have sex 3 or 4 times a day. I might be shooting blanks after a while but still experience orgasms each time with proper stimulation. Also it feels very natural, only comes up when you want it to. The first few hours after taking one I will experience a stuffy nose and a slight headache but not bad enough to spoil my fun.
The most important thing I found it useful for is that I have always had some anxiety on a first time with a girl, sometimes it takes about 3 dates before it starts to work like it should. It takes away the anxiety and even if I don't use it on the second date my confidence is still up.
Another side effect, a lot more women seem to think they fall in love with you after you take that stuff so use with caution, seriously hurting womens feelings in not a nice thing to do.
SSRI’s (Prozac, Paxil, Lexapro) can make one basically anorgasmic. The latter two did that to me (Prozac not so much). I experimented with this years ago, and it was possible to masturbate to orgasm with moderate amounts of Paxil or Lexapro in my bloodstream, but very difficult and shockingly painful. I may have torn something around the prostate as well.
This doesn’t speak to the question of whether he would have gone deaf anyway. He may believe he’s losing his hearing because of the meds, but that’s no proof he is. He’s 85, fer chrise sake. He could very well be going deaf from old age. If his water carrier is still working like a magic wand, that’s wonderful, but may be totally unrelated.
Priapism (a boner that won’t go away) can be extremely painful and unpleasant, and can result in thrombosis of the dick, and other unfortunate complications.
From highly informative to comic gold in one sentence. Bravo.
I’m sorry, but due to complications on the medication you were presribed and your prolonged priapism, the medical staff is sorry to inform you that you have Terminal Thrombosis of the Dick, or TTD.
This YouTube vid is very informative, but also disturbing. Priapism - in itself sounds like the hot setup. The truth and the treatment - not good. Watch this interesting video if you dare:
