If a man or woman gets caught cheating in their 40's or 50's is it likely they've cheated before?

Just curious. Any research on this?

My inclination would be that if a man or woman is discovered having an affair in their 40’s or 50’s the chances are pretty good this is not their first time stepping out, and they just finally got caught.

I don’t have any data, but from my experience as a divorce lawyer, I’d say that it is a mix between folks that have had affairs before, and folks who are reaching a change in life and are moving on. When people move on, sometimes they separate before they find another partner, but very often they do not want to be without a partner, so they have an affair, then separate from their first partner, and the formalize the relationship with their lover by marrying.
