If Disney owns ABC....

…AND “The Drew Carey Show” is made by a subsidiary of Disney, AND Drew Carey is the host of an attraction at Walt Disney World, then WHY did an ad for Universal Studios Escape (a competing theme park in Orlando) air during “The Drew Cary Show” Wednesday night?

Did Disney executives not catch this? Were Universal executives laughing their butts off when they signed the contract?

I’m sure the Evil Empire known as Disney didn’t care. They got paid for the section of ad time they sold. Besides, if a family goes to Orlando to visit Universal, don’t you think they would probably make the trip to Disney World as well? There are enough consumer dollars to go around for everyone…

That’s standard practice in the TV industry. You’ll also see ads for Paramount flicks on all the networks and Fox films on all the channels and so on like that. I’ve seen ads for Disney films on FOX and the WB and UPN. They scratch each others’ backs.

But here’s something to be suspicious about: the same company, News Corporation, run by Rupert Murdock, owns both the FOX network and TV Guide. So be a bit skeptical when a FOX show gets a good review in TV Guide.

Hey, Disney’s not doing well enough that it should spurn Universal’s money (even if Universal’s doing even worse than Disney is).

It’s just business. Disney pays Warner Brothers for the Drew Carey show, and Universal pays Disney for the right to trumpet their tourist attraction for 30 seconds. As long as the checks don’t bounce, nobody cares much.
