If God had wanted boys to wear earrings, he'd have made them girls!

Alabama Governor Don Siegelman in reference to an 8-year old boy who was expelled for wearing an earring:

I have to say, I am astounded by the sheer brilliance of this statement. You poor, poor residents of Alabama.

Pardon me while I beat my head against my desk.

Oh THAT’S rich. When will people realize that the decision about what is acceptable for jewelry on men or women is culturally and socially derived? I mean, there have been plenty of cultures where men where earrings (or the like). I’m so sorry that this doesn’t fit into his white bread world.

Feh.

Some men look good in earrings, some don’t.

It’ fine as long as you keep it in the left ear. Or was it the right ear.

DaLovin’Dj

Wear. Wear! :give myself a swift knock on the back of the head:

Personally, I agree with the Guv. I don’t like to see earing on guys. Of course, I despise tatoos also so I guess I’m really in the minority.

Land of the free…

Well, everyone’s entitled to their opinion, of course. But his statement, aside from being incredibly sexist, was just plain STUPID (God only wants girls to wear earrings? I guess that’s why we’re born with them?). Not to mention that it would be nice for important political figures to at least pretend they aren’t sexist, discriminatory slobs.

Ah. Well Andy. I agree that, if either of us met him (Gov. Siegelman) we’d probably both agree that he’s a “Good ol’ boy” and many of his comments/opinions would be distasteful to us. I certainly don’t agree with the latter part of his statement (…born…), but in general I agree with him that I wouldn’t want my teen to be wearing an earring through the eyebrow, tongue, or bellybutton. Sexism aside, I guess I just think it looks silly; be it on boys or girls.

Interesting thing is that it would seem from the Bible (OT) that men wore earings back in those days.

“If God had wanted you to wear earrings, he’d have made you
a girl”.

That makes sens, Don, since we all know that girls pop out of the womb wearing jewelry.

Dear Gov. Siegelman: I guess if God had wanted you to have an actual brain, he wouldn’t have made you a politician. It’s nice to know that my Alabama state taxes are funding that monolithic jockstrap used to support a big dick like you.

And if God had meant you to be governor he’d have sewn your lips shut.

Dire, I’ll thank you for not treating “politician” as if it were an insult, if you don’t mind. But I certainly agree with your sentiments. Damn if this guy doesn’t make me want to go out and get another coupla piercings to go with the three earrings I already have. (Two in the right, too, just to piss everybody off.)

(my bolding) Bwwahaahaaha! Bunny points to Dire Wolf for the funniest phrase of the day.

“That makes sens, Don, since we all know that girls pop out of the womb wearing jewelry.”

—Well, I was born wearing a string of pearls and carrying a lorgnette.

But that’s just me.

If God had wanted girls to wear earrings, he would have made them pirates.

It seems to me MD that you’re almost as intolerant/nearsighted as the venerable Gov. Wearing body jewelry/art anywhere is silly. Yes, even women wearing earrings and or necklaces serves no practical purpose whatsoever. Neither does a woman’s shaving of her legs or a man’s shaving of his face, unless of course it has some sort of aesthetic appeal. Then it becomes a medium of expression and hence an art form. Was little Johnny attempting to create a “work of art”? Probably not, but he did anyway which is the truest form of art in my opinion.

Oh, one final point. If there was a god and it wanted people to drive cars … or ride bicycles … or eat popcorn …

Boys with earrings make the Baby Jesus cry.

Piercingly,
Spritle

A wistful question pops to mind, not for the first time:

“When, oh when, will the politicians in this state stop willfully trying to make this place look bad?”
