If I find a pair of lab balances in a teenager's room...

Um…aren’t we going overboard with nailing everything down and changing every lock in the universe?

He’s possibly a drug dealer, not possibly a car thief or cat burglar.

I don’t know. Drug dealers and abusers aren’t the most trustworthy people in the world.

The kid’s already proven that he is unwilling to abide by at least some of the rules of the house. He has already stolen a vehicle to use to sell drugs. (Granted, he returned it, but consider that, if the car had been found missing, it could have been reported stolen.) I don’t consider changing the locks to be overboard.

A bit overbroad IMHO.

You just don’t hear about all trustworthy ones because they lead normal lives. It’s the POOR dealers and abusers who steal–the middle class and wealthy ones aren’t on the streets; they pay their taxes, mow their lawns, and generally don’t get caught up in the legal system.

Talk to the kid. Get bonding, pronto.

Respectfully, I think this is an overly broad generalization, as suggested already by Flipshod. Some of the most responsible people I’ve known (with an incredible business sense) have dealt pot. That’s not a commentary on this kid, however, who’s past does suggest a great deal of irresponsible behavior.

However, there seem to be people posting to suggest that drug users are all crazed addicts who will do anything to get a fix, to wit:

When someone “comes down” from pot, they tend to go to sleep. This kid may be a fuckup, and he may be dangerous, and his disregard for his relatives, or the law, may be indicative of that behavior, but his drug use, in and of itself, is not necessarily proof that he is a raving thief.

Keep in mind that Dr. Mercotan practices medicine in a state prison.

Now, you can find hookers who don’t have STD’s - that doesn’t mean that prostitution isn’t a problem when it comes to STD management. You can find mobsters who dress up like Santa Claus at Christmas - that has no bearing on the situation in the New Jersey construction industry.

Drug dealers and abusers are involved in myriad crimes and social pathologies, and the exceptions that aren’t hardly disprove the rule.

My grandfather had a good business sense, a nice way with people, and an incredible head for numbers. Unfortunately, he developed these skills running a numbers game. And while I don’t think of the man as any kind of hardened criminal, I’m not blind to the nasty characters he worked with and the awful things they did over the years to protect their racket.

So with all due respect back, you are wrong.

I know the internet is a great place to develop hardline positions and never waver from them, but I re-read your comment: “Drug dealers and abusers aren’t the most trustworthy people in the world.”

It is not couched as an absolute statement (i.e. drug dealers are all untrustworthy), and, in point of fact, is a generally good rule to go by. So, notwithstanding the plenty of exceptions I can think of (most of the drug dealers I knew in college were good college kids who liked to get stoned, and weren’t out to create problems for anyone), I’ll concede your correction.

My opinion regarding the fact that pot heads are not necessarily crazed thieves, however, still stands.

Can marijuana really cause death? I’ve never heard of anyone ODing on it. Do you mean that it can lead to lung problems over time?

(I see QtM already answered that. Never mind then.)

No one in this thread is demonizing marijuana while promoting alcohol. I truly hope you do/did not work at a rehab clinic, as the information you push here is wrong on several levels. It would be disastrous to say some of this stuff to people going through a clinic for rehabilitation. Frankly, many of your arguments are somewhat juvenile.

Can Handle the Truth, I have more experience than I would care to discuss when it comes to drugs (and the associated culture). I am glad to see you are considering steps to protect yourself and your household. Remember that it is not just your nephew involved, his friend(s) may take offense to the balance incident. They have already shown blatant disregard for society’s guidelines, and more importantly your (and your mother’s?) own; it is not a huge stretch of imagination to think they may do so again.

You can’t be THAT naive, can you?

No, I’m just guarding against leaping to conclusions. It doesn’t look good, that’s for sure, but he’s got to talk to the kid and see what’s going on before we cocon everything in Master locks and chains.

This is total BS. Marijuana cetainly is a drug, and heroin is NOT less dangerous than alcohol. Just because you worked in a rehab clinic as a nurse’s aide doesn’t qualify you as an expert.

BTW, I am a pharmacist, Ph.D. in clinical pharmacology
