The 1995 column; couldn’t find a previous thread about it: If Teflon is nonsticky, how do they get it to stick to the pan? - The Straight Dope

A sentence in the third paragraph has a surplus word: “This primer, like most primers, is thin, enabling it to flow into the the micro-scratches.”

Did Donald Schmidt’s new fluorinated polymer, mentioned in the last paragraph, ever, uh, pan out?

Here’s Dr. Schmidt’s obiturary. No word on his super slippery substance. Found a few articles in 1992 about the announcement, but nothing after that.

These columns have been pulled across to so many different formats over the years as they have traveled from newspaper column to the various online depositories they’ve been kept in, I’m surprised they’re scanning at all and that we just find occasional gremlins in the works.
