If we did have permanent threads, what would you recommend?

Lynn quoting and answering BarnStormer:

I already suggested this one earlier:
Don’t forget the link. Here’s how to post one.

Now of course it would be an updated version of the revised one:
Don’t forget the link. Here’s how to post one, Part Next

But there must be more. What else?
(What I’m suggesting is a thread only the mods could update, so it should be fairly permanent information.)

Show_Biz those are completely unnecessary; On the reply to topic page, there’s a link to all of the vBulletin codes. It’s just a couple lines above the wide blue bar that says “Post Reply.”

It looks like this:

Posts: HTML code is OFF. Smilies are ON. vB code is ON. [IMG] code is ON.

If you click the portion that says “vB code,” it opens a new browser window to a cheat sheet of vB tags.

I beg to differ.
My link has been cited here often enough when people have trouble that it’s obvious the “official rules” are too skimpy. Perhaps you could add to them?

But MY thread is not the question before this forum today:

Lynn said "Write up an article, submit it, if it’s good enough, we’ll consider making it a permanent thing.
"

I think this should be brought to the attention of those who have been feeling a need to speak up, but missed reading the offer.

If you think this is too skimpy, then all I can say is, “Whatever.”

I think there should be one permanent thread with one post for each topic.

My topic would be for the jargon about this site, like what vB means, and ubb (Please don’t tell me now, I know them now, but we used to have a thread that explained some and it keeps getting lost.)

I also agree that other people should suggest things.
A position paper is too formal for my one line idea.
I may remember something later myself. I know there was something once, but can’t think of it now.

Molosters
This one by Kenny(?) Now says Moe

Just save the real defitions and toss all the chitchat.
It would fit into a singe post on the permanent thread.

I think another perennial topic is this one: moderater vs. Administrator

That is, what are the many different titles around here, including researchers and advisory board and software techs and now interns.

(Newbies continually ask, but they get a lot of kidding before they get an actual answer.)

What’s your definition of many? Member, Guest, Banned, Moderator, and Administrator. I don’t call that many.

"…including researchers and advisory board and software techs and now interns. "

These roles are defined in various threads.

What threads deserve a “Permanent Bump” to FAQ status?

But in the looking, I ran across this thread of my own, so I might as well add to it.

I nominate this for addition to a FAQ List of Links about the board:
Get your Most-Active-Posters here - Bill H.

(This is a good example of why we shouldn’t ignore
Newbie contributions, as Bill H. compiled it in his tender first couple of weeks on the board.)

His first couple weeks as Bill H., that is. He was billehunt for a while before that. He got a new name and had the old one retired (I believe although still in the system, it doesn’t have posting privileges).

Why would a thread ranking people by number of posts/day as of six months ago be worthy of “Permanent Thread” status?

I’d love to see that original list from last July re-done  Actually, both lists - BillH’s and beatle’s.

Well, a week or two ago, I figured out the current post totals of the top 100 posters from Bill’s list. As for a new list, I think we’ll have to wait until the administration reactivates the Member List function again. That’s not likely to happen, but they do occasionally make mistakes when upgrading the software.

How about How DOES one become a moderator?

My Name is Show-Biz and my link should be a permanent link on the Straight Dope because I’m so smart and I know how to tell people how to post links.

WOW!

I bow before you.

You are a god!

(And who’s sock puppet are you? “Lurker” my ass.)

You know very well many people have found it useful.
In fact TubaDiva herself asked me to brush it up into a smaller format, similar to Louie’s masterwork on HTML for the prior software.

I would have done it, too.

[/hijack]

TubaDiva - I was too touchy about the way you asked before.
Maybe I still should do it, if you would tell me what format you want. Like Louie’s thread? or like the vB page?
Whatever you’d like.

But it also works fine as it is, if only people could find it. That’s where the FAQ link would come it.

Mr. Show_Biz. What was the point of your comment acusing Cannon of being, or having a sock puppet? Do you have substantiation of this? If not, please withdraw it. As has been stated here several times, and I’m certain you are aware of it, we’d prefer from now on that you do not make accusations of that nature on the message board anymore. Email your suspicions to any moderator or administrator; we, and only we, are fully equipped with the necessary tools to investigate the nature of individual posters. Please do not make public accusations of this nature again. M’kay?

As for the vB codes, try this recent thread by Louie, vb codes explained. He’s written a page of tricks and tips already. That should give you another thread to come through and bump to the top every couple of weeks. Thanks for playing.

We’re gonna redo the FAQ anyway, so perhaps we could put links in the FAQ to these threads. Or make 'em good and concise and incorporate them into the FAQ. (Credit given, of course, where due.)

I’ll bookmark this thread and add it to my notes, we’re gonna shoot for just after the first of the year for the changes. There’s a ton of other work that also needs doing here and not as much time to do it as we need.

Thanks for the tips, the hints, the good ideas, folks. We do appreciate it.

your humble TubaDiva
Administrator

You have been fighting against “Don’t forget the link…” for over 6 months now.
Why?
Had you ever read it, you would see that it contains completely different things from eith the vB thread or Louie’s newer thread.
You can see in the “Don’t forget the link…” thread, I gave full credit to Louie and respect his work.
Don’t you dare try to put us at odds, that is just being meanspirited.
We are both on the same side, trying to get requested information to the posters
You I do not respect. You may be a moderator, but every time you come to one of my thread it is to attack.
Shame on you. I’m trying to help here!

(As to the troll part, I didn’t bother to email you because I assumed Cannon and you were the same. He seems to have arrived to do your dirtywork. His first day and I get the honors. Well that’s nice. And I see he is now on the troll website you post at. Yes, what a coincidence. I’d link to that too, but I see TubaDiva edited out the link where it first appeared around here.)
“M’kay?” yourself. “Thanks for playing” yourself.
