Maryland would beg to differ. It’s the state sport!
Indeed, when I first heard of Musk forming a new party I thought ‘yeah, good luck with that’, but now it seems plausible.
I don’t know if Musk is constitutionally suited to heading a political party. He could never convince any large number of people that he’s out for anyone but himself. Even the most egotistical of politicians needs to be able to sell the idea that he or she is “for us” not just “for me.”
But there IS an opening for a party that would address a particular discontent on both left and right–anti “the elites” and pro “the regular people.” On the right “the elites” have traditionally been educated people, meaning you get Government by the Idiots (see “Trump Administration”).
But there’s resentment of Elites on the left, too–“the billionaires.” And regardless of where you stand on the increasing wealth/income gap, the historical facts don’t support the idea that our present trajectory leads to stability.
So someone who could address that, might have a change of taking votes from both the right and the left.
He can just promise a million dollars to everyone who signs up. Done.
Yes, I guess a few personality lapses on Elon’s part would readily be forgiven by newly-minted Millionaires.
