I’m starting to suspect that Trump leaves Musk in place as a focus of everyone’s hatred, so that everyone else in the administration, Trump included, is liked by comparison.

Perhaps not. And honestly, I can’t see Trump being that devious. But Musk is really unpopular, even among those in districts that voted overwhelmingly for Trump. From a New York Times article about a meeting Pete Sessions, Congressman from Texas, had with constituents in a small East Texas town.
