If you can guess this song from this info, your a genius.

There is this song now being used on a commercial that I used to hear as a kid. I THINK it might be a car commercial. I remember first seeing it on sesame street - it played with a cartoon of some black girls doing double dutch. I could have sworn the group was called the sugar hill gang (I know they exist but Im not sure if it’s them). At least it was something “Gang.” Anyway it has this really funky synthesizer line and there are maybe three or four female vocalists - it is perfect for a harlem double dutch scene and it has a jamaican flare. The girls sing the lyrics slow and there is some line like “There’s my boyfriend, my lovely boyfriend.”
Stop laughing. WTF is this song?

Sounds like Genius of Love, by The Tom Tom Club, a spinoff band by Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth, of The Talking Heads. It was released in the early eighties as a single, probably their biggest hit. I remember the line as “there’s my boyfriend, beautiful boyfriend…”

The Tom Tom Club used to play Talking Heads shows as a band within the band. More info here: http://www.tomtomclub.com/timeline.html

Unbelievable. How could you have possibly gotten that from that info? The only thing remotely close is Club ~ Gang. Anywayl, I’m truly indebted. Did you remember it from Sesame Street or a recent commercial or does it sort of sound like a double dutch thing?

I was, at their heyday, a big Talking Heads and Tina Weymouth fan. Saw em a lot.The line "beautiful boyfriend tipped me off, plus the basic syntho beat. After looking at this site:http://www.tomtomclub.net/music.html I think the line is “boyfriend, my lucky boyfriend”… There are three sound/video clips of Genius of Love, the Stop Making Sense one being most true to my memory.

The Tom Tom club was a bridge band , along with Blondie, from alterna-pop to rap. The musicians incorporated a lot of early NY rap style into their music, and were more likely to get MTV (when it was all shiny and new) and radio airplay

Kinda funny, how yer title said “Genius”, no? I kinda assumed you really knew the answer because of that coincidence.

Do I win anything?

I could have guessed it just from the lyric you provided. I’m pretty sure it was the Tom Tom Club’s biggest hit. Used to hear it at clubs. I prefer “Who Wants an Ugly Girl?” but you can’t really dance to that.
