Yeah, that was a pretty callous thing to say. I was just expressing my empathy with the OP. Guess that was a pretty stupid way to put it.
I generally feel bad for homeless or “street people.” I once gave my shoes to a woman with a child who was apparently homeless. (I’d just bought a new pair and gave her the old ones, which happened to fit her.) I’ve given other handouts too many times to count…money, food, etc. I know that their illnesses and other circumstances prevent them from functioning and I take enough psychiatric drugs to be able to sympathize with that.
But I seriously always assumed that if you offered one of them a job of some type, they’d jump on the chance. I’m not sure what mental illness would have rendered this man unable to pick some stuff up off the ground.
Klaatu, I DO see your point. This guy was really just an able-bodied scammer, he ought to get his ass to a job, or be GRATEFUL that you offered him some work.
Who knows, if he’d worked very hard for you, he might have had a bit of cash work every day. His loss.
