Huh. Today’s was under a minute for me. Got blue, green, yellow, purple.
People still talking about “hangdog”. I have known the word for ages, I’m sure I read it in places like Mad Magazine, in reference to actors like Walter Matthau or Charles Grodin. These days you could apply it to Larry David.
Same. Usually it would be written as “hangdog expression”.
I’m really the only one this thread who was unfamiliar with it. I brought it up again because mollycoddle came up and the person was not familiar with that word, and for me it’s pretty normal, whereas I had never heard hangdog before. And, no, not even in “hangdog expression.” It was obliquely suggesting how one person’s ordinary is another’s extraordinary. I’ve been waiting on Baader-Meinhof on this one, as it always happens to me when I learn a new word that is relatively common that I’ve missed my whole life (last time was the word “tony” as in upscale. Somehow I missed that until maybe five ten years ago. Then it was everywhere after I learned it.)
I spotted TRIUMPH and LAMB CHOP immediately and thus made quick work of Blue.
Yellow and Green were quite mundane, but not that tough. Purple was by default; I’m confident it would have occurred to me if I’d thought about it more, but just wasn’t feeling it enough to make the effort.
As did I, and I also spotted PUNCH, but I wasn’t aware that TRIUMPH belonged in that category until I did a Google search. Hope that isn’t considered cheating.
Nah. We’ve had this discussion more than once over on the Wordle thread regarding used word lists and anagram generators.
It’s just a little online game; we’re not competing against each other. It’s supposed to be fun. Everyone gets to play whatever way makes it fun for them.
Purple jumped out for me first today, then a muff of a guess, green, yellow, blue. I’m a bit embarrassed I didn’t spot blue right away (though I would have pegged it as a purple.)
That makes me feel better. However, even if it was considered bending the rules, I won’t stop the practice. I need all the small victories I can muster.
For what it’s worth, I frequently use Google or Wikipedia on NYT crossword clues that I’m stuck on. Whatever works for you…
The first dozen results for any of the NYT Crossword Puzzle clues will often be for pages that explicitly provide the answer. I prefer to dig down to sites that aren’t quite so on the spot.
Yeah, the rule I try to follow is: Wikipedia is ok, but not Google. That’s because Google will often give the answer directly.
My rule is no outside sources. For me, I know it’s trivial to look up 99% of the time, so if I am absolutely stuck like on a Friday or Saturday puzzle, I either reveal the answer outright (because looking it up is essentially just as much of a non-challenge) or just give up. (I play on phone or computer where this is an option.) I also consider it a DNF, but I don’t care about streaks or anything like that. But we all get to make whatever rules we want. I do sometimes find being away from the puzzle for hours percolates the missing answers to my head, anyway.
Got today with no mistakes. I recognized purple right away, except I’ve never heard “butty” before, so I couldn’t be sure. It sounded right, but I did the rest instead of guessing.
I also got the purple category first today.
Weirdly, every day for the last week (including today) I’ve found yellow first.
Today felt like yellow was jumping up and down, waving its hands like it wants to be picked to go up on stage.
Meanwhile, blue felt like joining purple in the eye roll department.
I hate it when they get cute like that but it was an easy puzzle for me today.
Anybody do the “Sports” version? They did the thing today.
Yeah, pretty straightforward with yellow, blue, green, purple in about thirty seconds.
