Yeah, I’d say about a quarter of the time the purple screams out at you, and this was one of them. A day or two ago there was FINLET, which did the same. But you do have to be careful with red herrings just in case, like we had with MAR, SNICKER, MOUND, and WHOPPER the other day.

Like I said, I’m new at this. Is there significance to the different colors? Like, the purple category is always the ____ one?

In theory, from the least to the most difficult is supposed to be yellow, green, blue, purple. In practice, yellow tends to be four synonyms, and if there’s a word play category it’s purple.

Stopped for a second because I thought Connections were a backing band for someone or other but then realised I was thinking of the Attractions and now I’m wondering why they didn’t use ATTRACTION as a clue to make things tricky

Here’s my Monday puzzle too. I almost got a reverse rainbow, but didn’t quite manage it.

I did go for the obvious red-herring because … why not?

What was the red herring?

Pips, Connections, Strands, Tiles are all NYT games.

My knowledge of German helped me with Green. Strand is German for beach or shore but I never heard anyone use it in English the way they imply here.

I saw the Red Herring and thought it was cute but did not pick it.

I have. In fact there’s literally a street in London paralleling the river called that.

I fell for the obvious red herring. I’ve seen strand used that way.

September 15.

Connections annoys me (even though I do it every day. But I don’t particularly care if I extend my winning streak), as a general rule. But, props where they’re due, today’s purple solution was pretty elegant.

I actually got purple first, due to Heartbreaker and Wailer. Then Blue, followed by Yellow. Strand threw me for a loop until the answer was revealed.

Tuesday’s game. I guessed one thing I was unfamiliar with.

I was completely clueless about purple, and only got it by process of elimination (though I did imagine that banshees and wailers would go together). But I have seen strand used in that way, mostly in old folk songs, so that part wasn’t too tough for me.

Despite the opening arrangement of the top line it is not apparently ROGER PEN ROSE MONTH. But nice to see Penrose get a shoutout anyway.
