…you’ll want to see “Surf’s Up,” the animated movie about surfing penguins, showing now in a theater near you (or maybe not so near you). Jeff Bridges does the voice of a pudgy penguin who sounds a lot like The Dude would, if he’d taken up surfing instead of bowling. And the movie itself isn’t bad.

It’s one of my all-time favorite movies (Lebowski) but you are hardly giving the animated movie a ringing endorsement (not bad.) Obviously you are not a promoter if that is the preferred nomenclature.

Altho the voice casting was spot on, it’s not such an amazing thing to have one perfectly cast voice actor as to base seeing a movie on. A lot of the other casting was good too, especially Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite) as Joe the chicken surfer.
That said, I did love this movie. I plan on seeing it again. It was amusing, sweet, fun, and “shot” beautifully. The soundtrack was good too. It had a nice message without being preachy. The “film is shot by a reality show crew” conceit was clever too. It made me want to learn to surf. The only bad thing was in a movie about sea creatures there were no turtles!
