"Surf's Up"

The wife and I just returned from watching the animated feature “Surf’s Up.” It had it’s world release here in Thailand last month, and I don’t think it’s hit the US yet. It’s great! A pseudo-documentary about surfing penguins. If you’re like me, you are probably rolling your eyes and thinking, “Oh, JUST what we need, another animated penguin film.” That’s what I thought, too, but this one is really, really good. Definitely one that adults will like as much as children, and I’ll be surprised if it’s not short-listed for the new Animated-Film Oscar. Features the voices of Shia LaBeouf, Jeff Bridges, Zooey Deschanel, Jon Heder and James Woods. Watch for it.

Actually, it played in the US months ago. I liked it too. It’s very cute, and I liked the mockumentary style of it. And Jeff Bridges as the Dude’s brother was well worth the money.

Really? imdb.com said Thailand was it’s premier, October 23. But no matter. I’m glad you saw it and liked it. As usual, we were the only ones to stay to the very end of the credits, and so we saw the last little post-credit bit.

That’s odd. You must be looking at a different page. The one I just now looked at says it was released in the USA on June 8, and lots and lots of other countries before it hit Thailand.

We almost always stay for the credits so I know I saw what you saw, but it’s been so long I don’t remember what it was. Could you put it in spoiler tags?

Did I hear the previews correctly when it said “based on a true story” or did I hallucinate that?

IMDB changed it’s release date settings, so that it gives you the release date based on the IP you are using to view the page ie: view it from the US and you get the US release date, Australians get ours etcetera.

To make it slightly confusing they don’t tell you this, so it does look like you’re seeing the worldwide release date rather than just your local one.

I’m ashamed to admit that I have not figured out how to do spoiler tags. But I can safely say it involves the interview at Cody’s home with his brother and mother being over and equipment being removed from the house.

Thank you! That explains a lot. I was wondering why so many movies recently were having their premier in Thailand. :o

I thought it was some sort of marketing strategy.

I saw a preview presentation for this movie 2 years ago at ComiCon and thought it looked really well done. My next thought was that it was going to get totally creamed by “Happy Feet” which was released first (I think), and it did :frowning: . I rented it on DVD a couple of weeks ago and thought it was cute and quite funny - lots of little charming details.

We liked “Happy Feet,” but “Surf’s Up” is clearly the better film.
