I saw a rating system on another board, and the problem is that you end up with smite wars. Not to mention smite-puppets.
I can see that happening. Smite puppets are a tricky issue, but smite wars could be handled if you somehow also evaluated someone’s rating behavior. Also, if you prevent repeat voting. In the end, though, you are right, every system is gameable.
See the trick is that brazil84 is such a habitually dishonest poster that he probably just thinks people are smiting him whereas they are actually just honestly rating the value and content of his worthless talking points and twisting posts.
You have to consider the poster in many cases. For humor reread his 10 rules above and then consider how he posts in GD.

Please quote and cite 3 lies I told. Thank you.

btw, could you please PM me that other board?

I specifically said dishonest. I did not say lies. Your debating technique in AGW threads have been dishonest. Try not to use too many strawmen or you will need to ban yourself. Rule 1 I believe on your list.

I’m not sure what the difference is, but I would certainly not want to be accused of misrepresenting your position. So I withdraw my earlier request. Instead, please quote and cite 3 examples of my supposed dishonesty in “AGW threads.”
Thank you.

Karma and poster ratings systems are enabled in many message board systems, but they’re difficult to administer, and you do see smite/spite wars.
There’s a lto of vBulletin features that I would not implement, just because they’re more trouble than they’re worth. Thread tagging, for instance: threads could be tagged with nonsense or inappropriate subjects.

Yeah, I’m not surprised.
Oh, and I totally agree with the idea of having a separate forum for politics. I’m so freaking sick of seeing Obama, Palin, and those other two dudes mentioned in thread titles.

HEY! linkie no workie.
I’d double, no triple the server speed.
Start charging for posting again, or run banner ads. The SDMB would be a good place for all sorts of ads, there’s a diverse group of interests here.
Several controversial moderators would be politely let go.
Allow avatars (small 100x100 thumbnail portraits.)

Another form of strawmanning is to interpret my statements in an unreasonable way. For example, if I claim that men are taller than women, it would be unreasonable to interpret this as a claim that every man is taller than every woman. Or if I claim that smoking has been proven to cause lung cancer, I am obviously talking about proof in the scientific sense — not in a mathematical or logical sense. If you interpret my words unreasonably, I will correct you and you will be expected to to continue the discussion using the correct interpretation.
Holy crap that would be a nice rule to have here. That issue can make it maddening to try to talk to a lot of members of this board.

No sock banning, no troll banning, but still banning for being a jerk. If you annoy us with your sockishness or your trollishness, you’re being a jerk and will be banned for that. Otherwise, I don’t care if you’re Sybil and Sybil II looking to get a rise out of yourself; if you’re not breaking the rules that matter, welcome back!
I read (not post-to) another board that allows socks, and it sucks. The problem is, it’s impossible to get rid of anyone because all the annoying people have 15 different accounts and don’t give a shit if one of them gets banned. Also, it caused an evolution of banning into something that’s not a big deal at all and is done on a whim without the consideration and discussion that it gets here. You’ve been posting for 5 years and have 20,000 good posts and then you tell a joke a moderator doesn’t like when he or she is having a bad day? BANNED.
Similarly, they allow limitless bumps so every thread is in a constant battle to stay at the top of the forums. These two issues alone are 90% of the reason I don’t post there - even though there is a lot of great content if you can wade through all the noise - and they make me appreciate it here a lot more.
I would enforce a DNFTT rule. If you think someone’s a troll you can:
- Call them a troll once (in the pit only, of course).
- Make your claim why you think they’re a troll.
- Never be allowed to speak to them or about them again.
- If they continue to do “trollish” things, you’re still allowed to report their posts to mods. And that’s it. Even stating you reported them will get you perma-banned.
First off, this would cut the food consumption of trolls by about 50%. Second, this would make people actually think before accusing someone. The word has pretty much lost all meaning and become a generic insult. And lastly, it would stop threads that are made up of two dipshits arguing back & forth for 100 fucking hours about nothing…
Dipshit A: “you’re a dumb troll!”
Dipshit B: “no, you are!”
Dipshit A: “cite?”
