If you whine about political correctness, you're a bigot

Outside of the pit. I give far more benefit of doubt to people who use offensive words and symbols because I’ve lived in many different situations around many different people and know that words and symbols very rarely tell a complete story.

So yeah if someone flies a Confederate flag or calls a woman “bitch” or whatever I don’t organize a campaign to demonize them. If I want to change minds concerning bigotry or oppression I take a different approach.

I’m one of those you’d believe were a bigot because I think the modern form of “PC” is a mindless cult. jsgoddess pointed out I only participate in topics that involve the right to offend. That’s not entirely true but at the moment it’s close enough. And I have no problem defending the right to offend.

I do find it humorous that the the defense is actually offensive. I wonder how you’d feel about the ACLU. Or defense lawyers.

For what it’s worth, I certainly wouldn’t believe you a bigot for thinking that.

Just stupid.

True. I don’t think he would have to be a bigot based on that, though it helps.

No, it’s the combination of that, plus saying that “Coontown”-like forums would be fine but the nasty pit is sooo nasty. Or defending the confederacy. Or fun with everyone’s favorite science, scientific racism.

Shut up, moron.

Oh, Coontown. Yeah that place is vile. Should it be shut down? If Reddit wants to sure. If Reddit wants to be more or less content neutral than no. I don’t think I’ve ever defended the Confederacy. I am anti secession for practically any reason. And what is scientific racism? Do you have any quotes, in context, that support your claims?

Reddit and Straight Dope are two different types of boards. So of course I’m going to rag about the pit which is full of hypocritical dunces. There is a reason I don’t post on sites like 4chan or Reddit. Straight Dope actually has some useful people with some useful information. Than we have folks like you, who sit judgmental and exhibit dreadful reading comprehension.

I’d be defensive if I were a member of a brain washed cult as well. Even Chris Rock is annoyed by you people. http://townhall.com/tipsheet/kevinglass/2014/12/01/what-chris-rock-said-about-political-correctness-should-make-college-students-gasp-n1925772

Can you show us an example where someone in this thread said referring to someone by their race is unacceptable? Because that’s what Chris Rock’s quote is about. Just because your news blog of choice slapped “political correctness” in the title to generate pageviews doesn’t mean that’s what the content of the article conveys.

I find the “even Chris Rock” phrasing hilarious. CHRIS ROCK! EVEN CHRIS ROCK! My heavens!

I’ve been on a real “the title of the story does not match the story’s content” kick lately, so I missed that part.

Did you get the vapors?

You with your actual clicking of links… I lazily just saw the townhall.com url and the “even Chris Rock” and laughed and laughed.

Aren’t you ridiculous. The PC crowd is too busy being offended to laugh.

I was already somewhat familiar with the Chris Rock quote. I really only clicked to verify townhall.com didn’t have information I hadn’t seen yet

Between your wienerschnitzel and my schnoodlewe’d be two wild and crazy guys!

You needn’t worry about that. In fact, if we were neighbors I think we’d have a relationship rather like Ozzie Nelson and his pal, Thorny. Admit it, you’re a lot like Ozzie, aren’t you (that’s my mental image)?

…hmm, on second thought, maybe we needn’t be next door neighbors, you can live somewhere down the road from me…downwind.

I find this perspective fascinating, and would like to explore it further. I will start a thread in GD. (Well, I intend to start one, if a crisis does not call me away from my PC.)

I think you totally missed my point. At no point was I comparing:
(1) How bad it is when people with disabilities have to deal with people using the wrong term to describe then
vs
(2) How bad it is when people with disabilities have to actually attempt to live each day of their life with their disabilities in a society that frequently has inadequate wheelchair ramps, etc.

I have no basis for making such a comparison.

Rather, I was comparing
(1) How bad it is when people with disabilities have to actually attempt to live each day of their life with their disabilities in a society that frequently has inadequate wheelchair ramps, etc.
vs
(2) How bad it is for people WITHOUT disabilities when they suffer the terrible indignity of having people with disabilities tell them they’re using the wrong words to describe people with disabilities

When you say “most concerned”, do you mean “most concerned, out of all the issues that exist in the world” or “most concerned, out of all the issues specifically facing people with disabilities”, or “most concerned, out of issues facing people with disabilities that have to do with choice of language and patterns of thought”?

This won’t be addressed because it summarily wins the debate.

That and it’s not very fun to poke holes in a good argument.

Absolutely! Except I’m not sure you’re using the words “summarily”, “wins” and “debate” correctly. Or that adaher remembers the OP isn’t about whether ‘pc-ness’ exists or whether some liberal groups have ever been ridiculously oversensitive.

Other than that, right on!

You’re impressively hypocritical.

I don’t think you know what that word means however I defend your right to misuse it.
