If you win the lottery on Christmas, can you keep it?

I just bought a ticket for the Powerball. The pot is $25 million. (Cash option, after taxes, probably get to take home about $6 million.) The drawing will be on Christmas Eve.

Now, I’m a heathen. But I still could not help feeling a twinge of superstition as I bought the ticket. So, I guess my question is:

Suppose you win the lottery on a date that is of signifigance to your religious calendar. How much do you have to donate to charity in order to avoid bad karma?

Not a bloody penny. I would donate whatever made me feel good, and not because of any religious twaddle.

$12.25

You should be very careful about this one.

The only safe thing to do in this particular case is donate the entire proceeds to LiveOnAPlane.

I’d give 40% to The Sacred Heart Tabernacle of the Internal Revenue, that outta just about cover everything.

DING DING DING! We have a winner!

I would think, “All my life, I’ve been praying with absolutely no result, and now it finally pays off.” No, I don’t think that’s quite what I’d think.

Exactly. There isn’t a day on the calendar that doesn’t have some sort of significance somewhere.

It’s a fair question. I’d give it all to Jesus, because it was his birthday and he deserves it. “It’s my birthday present, preciousssss…”

I’d act as custodian and hold onto it until he came along, however. Whatever I spent until he showed up would be custodial fees, and well deserved.

Oh, and if he does show up at the door, don’t just go by the robes and sandals and holes in the palms. Have a few loaves and fishes around, maybe a glass of water so he can prove his identity.

I am so going to hell…

If you had already given some people “thought that counts” gifts (read: cheap ones) then you probably could be reasonably expected to give a little more after your winning.

Give Jesus an amount equal to the year of his birth.

Change your name to Caeser and render unto yourself.

All jokes aside, this secular heathen guesses that Christian faiths do not presume to require a greater tithe on Xmas than on any other date. I think the standard would be 10%, whether you won on Christmas or on Arbor Day.

If you aren’t a Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist or Janist, then nothing.
