If you worked at a video store, what would you watch?

Here’s the deal. I usually get into the funky video store that I work at around 4 or 5 at night. Before, say, 8 PM we have to watch kiddie-happy movies, so we don’t horrify the kids. After that, it’s up for grabs. On Friday the 13th, we watched Dead Alive. Eep.

However, I’ve worked there for 4 weeks, and am running out of favorite movies to watch. I work with three boys, and one chick. One of the boys is a huge Star Wars fan. He almost got smacked last night when he made a psuedo-snide remark about my choice of The Philidelphia Story as the kiddie-happy movie. There is the artsy guy who is nice enough to not give me grief about anything I pick. The other guy has been on vacation, so I don’t know what he likes. The chick is WAAAY too much like me in every way possible, so we agree on most movies.

I’m big on theme nights. We usually have time for one kid happy movie and two R rated movies in one night. Devise some fun theme nights that my coworkers will enjoy. Some things to remember: these movies are background noise, something to stare at when there is a lull in the crowds. Complicated or subtitled movies tend to be hard to follow, though we did watch Run, Lola Run the other night. Anything with audible sex scenes tends to make anyone who is in the store stop whatever they are doing and stare with disbelief at the TV. So porn is out.

Do my job, Dopers.

How’z about showing some of these films which I’ve seen once or twice and really liked and am always meaning to see again, but I always draw a blank on when I actually get to the movie rental place (and thus they end up renting the latest Robin Williams piece-of-crap du jour).

Island of Missing Children
Doctor Stranglove
Woody Allens “Zelig”
Brazil

Err, I’m drawing a blank…

Guess I’ll go get Bicentennial Man.

“Clerks” - over and over and over and over

Theme nights, eh?

Delicatessen
The City of Lost Children

L.A. Story
Joe Versus the Volcano

Time Bandits
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen

The Big Sleep
Double Indemnity

The Right Stuff
Apollo 13

Mix and match at your peril.

Pornos…all the Pornos available. I’d put em in, and jack the volume at the good parts…

But not just normal pornos…those cheesy pathetic ones with a plot. So that way there is a bit of something happening and people think they’re watching a movie…then bam…uhhh…uhhh…ahhhhh…ohhhhh…mmmmmm…yeah yeah…ahhhh.right there, right there, yeah yeah yeah…ad nauseum.

That would be fun. Sure I’d get fired, but the kodak moments would be worth it.

Resident BOFH

Going through all the James Bond movies would keep you occupied for a while, especially if you included the non-canon titles Casino Royale and Never Say Never Again (not that I would recommend that you or anyone see Casino Royale).

You need to throw in a few Musical Nights, too. Fiddler On The Roof, Gigi, My Fair Lady, West Side Story…they just don’t make 'em like that anymore.

Reefer Madness, Trainspotting, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas mayhaps?

Some movies for you. . . .

Trains:

Thomas the Tank Engine: Spills and Chills
Throw Mama from the Train
Mission Impossible (great train scene at the end!!)
Dogs:

All dogs go to Heaven, Bethovan or Blues clues you choose
The truth about Cats & Dogs (ok wierd phonesex scene, insert “Milo & Otis” here)
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
Fish:

The Little Mermaid
Jaws
Deuce Bigalow: Male Giggalo
Natural Disater Night:

Winnie the Pooh: One Blustery Day
Twister
Hard Rain
I must have been smoking something:

Alice in Wonderland
Half Baked
One Flew over the Cockoo’s nest

Space:

The Muppets in Space
Star Wars (for that Guy!)
Space Balls (always a good follow up to that movie)
Escape this Damned Confinment:

RugRats movie
Shawshank Redemption (hands down the best movie ever made)
Life - Eddie Murphy, Martin
Stereotypes/racism:

An Extremely Goofy Movie
The Power of One
Rosewood

Crazy Professors:

Flubber
The Nutty Professor (original)
The Nutty Professor, Eddie Murphy

Jungle/caveman:

George of the Jungle
Jungle Book (not the cartoon)
Ensino Man

Flying things:

Dumbo
The Rocketeer
Hitchcock’s The Birds
Robin Hood:

Disney’s Robin Hood
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
Robin Hood: Men in Tights (I have memorized this one!!)
Basketball:

White Men Can’t jump (explicit lyrics, maybe The Air up there)
Love & Basketball

Sleepy People:

Sleeping Beauty
Flatliners
While you were sleeping

Cinderella
Ever After
Princess Bride

Creepy Crawlers:

Ants
Aracnaphobia
The Nest (TV movie? or Honey I shrunk the Kids)
Giant Things:

James and the Giant Peach
Anaconda
Godzilla, (some people think its lame, so 2,000 leagues under the sea will do fine)

Gay Pride:

Seasame’s Street: Best of Bert and Ernie
(have you seen this lately? they now share a bed!)
Chasing Amy
Three to Tango

Crossdressing:

Mrs. Doubtfire
Priscilla Queen of the Desert
To Wong Foo, thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar
Women and the Dogs the get with:

Lady and the Tramp
Waiting to Exhale
200 ciggarettes

ok I have toasted my brain enough!!!

No, no, not Prince of Thieves. The Adventures of Robin Hood (with Errol Flynn)!

On that theme, I’d have to go with:

The General (Buster Keaton, 1927)
Strangers on a Train
Runaway Train

and while I’m at it:

Duck Amuck
Metropolis
Brazil

To say nothing of “Soylent Green”.

When I was in 7th grade, a “friend” of mine managed to spoil the movie for everyone by dramatically yelling out “Oh, my god, Soylent Green is made from people!”

In retrospect, we should have beaten the living shit out of him.

The Pirate Movie
The Princess Bride
Ghostbusters
Highlander
Star Wars (any of 'em)
The Little Mermaid
From the Hip
Major League

Movies people have seen before so they don’t need to watch but may be tempted to watch again. If nothing else it will invoke happy memories.

When I worked in a video store there were two movies that I constantly watched. Never ever got tired of them.
They were…
Can’t stop the Music
and
Sextette.
If you watch either of these movies you will understand. Great great stuff.

Ummmm…for detailed descriptions of the horrors of the above movies, check out Jabootu’s reviews of Can’t Stop The Music and Sextette.

Excerpts:

I’m sorry, but I can not take any review of Can’t Stop the Music seriously if it doe not mention Steve Guttenburg. The scene of him rollerskating down the streets of New York is classic.

As for Sextette, merely look at the list of stars in it.

Mae West
Timothy Dalton
Dom DeLuise
Tony Curtis
Ringo Starr
George Hamilton
Alice Cooper
Keith Moon
and yes

Regis Philbin

These two movies are in the so bad I can’t stop looking catagory. Sorta like Reflections in a Golden Eye (which featered Marlon Brando as a big ole flaming military homosexual, hilarious really) That one also has an early [url="http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=41620"Harvey Keitel.

But again, when I would play these movies, people would literally stop in their tracks and stare blankfaced at the screen. Usually, a couple braver ones would come up and ask “What the hell is that”
Makes the job that more entertaining. Plus, they are completely suitable for kids. So play them when lots of families are around.

For those who hide with pride:
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
The Hunt for Red October
Crimson Tide

For the boys of summer:
Rookie of the Year
Major League
A League of Their Own

heya, just thought I’d add a night-
DOPER NIGHT!
no, not us fellow dopers, but reefer night,

Cheech and Chong movies
Dazed and confused
Half Baked
and any others with a marijuana theme…
just a thought:)

another night could have Monty Python movies hahaha
