Ignore Lists - Skirting the rules to talk about this.

I’m not sure how they have it set up here but vBulletin offers one setting of a soft ignore where you can see that the post is there but have to click on it to read it, and a hard ignore where the post doesn’t show up at all. I’m not sure which one they use here but you can put me on ignore through your User CP, tell me and then I’ll post so you’ll know which kind it is.

I can’t tell you because that’s against the rules.

But maybe it works retroactively?

Does anyone know this? If I put poster X on my ignore list today, and then go browsing arond in old threads, are poster X’s posts before today also blocked? My guess would be yes.

I just tried this and yes it is retroactive.

For experimentational purposes I put pravnik on ignore and his post from yesterday was blocked.

Yet when Swallowed My Cellphone quoted him/her in post 35 I was able to see the quote.

Edit: I took pravnik off my list because it was only for the experiment and not that I actually wanter him/her ignored.

When someone is on your ignore list their posts look like this. Which is why it was obvious to SkipMagic in the “I disagree with Weirddave banning” thread in ATMB that lissener was talking about his ignore list when he characterized Weirddave’s posts as “empty grey space”.

I’m not certain if I’ve’ made it to the ignore list yet, though I know that I’ve managed to irritate a few posters on here sufficiently to be mentioned in thread I had no participation in.

First, I don’t think I’m worth even ignoring most of the time, my vanilla-ness virtually guarantees it’s not worth the effort.

Second, I’m hard to ignore. If I think I’m being ignored, I start using a sharp stick to prod until I get a response.

There is also “View Post” directly above that, which allows you to see the post without messing with the ignore list.

That’s what I remember. Then there was another argument about how annoying it was to know that the posts were even there, so then it was changed so you could set your own preference and everyone was happy, for about 5 minutes anyway. I still think it’s easier not to read posts from annoying people.

I have that happen all the time. I think the truth is some people just don’t read every post or maybe they notice one poster more than another. For example, if someone asked a Tolkien question and I got lucky and posted the correct answer , then hours later Qadgop came along and posted the same answer, he would be the one noticed because he’s Freaking Qadgop the Freaking Mercotan!

Well, if you post a Tolkien question hereabouts, it likely to be because you want Qadgop’s input but don’t want to PM him directly as it seems rude. The same is also true of medical questions. Hell, if I post a legal question, it’s usually with the hope that Oakminster or Bricker will chime in, though I never actually say so.

I’m 99% sure I’m on one person’s ignore list. It’s annoying because I feel like if I reply to his messages, it will look like I’m following him around. But at the same time, I’d rather be able to fight ignorance where it needs fighting.

Yeah, same here. There’s one guy who I think has me on his ignore list. We were having a debate about the ACLU, and he asked me something like “Why do you want the government to take away your freedom?” which was ridiculous straw man, so I responded something like “Why do you rape and eat babies?” and then went on in that post to address some of his points, and bring up some more of my own. He kept posting in that thread, but never answered my post. And while I’m not a prolific poster, that was probably about a year ago, and I’ve noted that he’s never responded to any more of my posts, even when I’ve come in and directly challenged him.

I don’t have an ignore list, and no idea if I appear on any oyhers.

As has been said some posters don’t read all posts. I tend to think there is also a certain clique mentality operating, where some posters pefer to deal with only certain others.

Was that screenshot staged just for this thread? Otherwise it is funny that you have at least two people on ignore and chose a screenshot of a conversation among them.

I don’t use ignores because I think it is just silly. If I did, though, there would be some GD threads that would look like a page of just that.

The only people I put on ignore are ones with stupid and obnoxious usernames. I can manually ignore stupid and obnoxious posts with no problem, but I don’t need to see IOWNJ00 PIMPDADDY’s name spamming the thread.

Doesn’t the name still appear when it says that you cannot see the message because StupidUserName is in your ignore list?

Luckily for me I’m universally loved plus as my opinions are always totally correct I dont have the problem of anyone sane disagreeing with me.
So the chances of me being on someones ignore list are laughably small.

Personally I put this down to my incredible intelligence,innate wisdom,charm and modesty.

I do wish sometimes though that I wasn’t so self effacing.

But I do tend to see that regular posters ignore posts by us somtime posters but will respond to another popular posters responses even though they said the exact same thing.

I used to think I was ignored (well…I am) but then I sat down and analyzed a couple of threads.

Virtually all posts from anyone were ‘ignored’ (meaning they were not quoted or responded to). The majority of the ones that were responded to were troll-like or controversial.

So, I have a feeling the vast majority of posters here feel ignored.
