Ignoring Members - Does Anyone Use This?

Color me ignorant, but I didn’t even realize we had the option until I read this thread. I’m off to play with my user control panel and see what else I’ve missed!

No! You’ll make God cry…!

And kill a kitten!

I’d never use it. I’m already pretty good at ignoring whatever I want to ignore. Like someone said above, I’d probably only wind up paying more attention to them if I did it.

I use it, mostly for judgmental jerks who never say anything different and only get my blood pressure up to read their same opinion again for the umpteenth dozen time. However, if I’m about to post to a thread, I’ll go ahead and read their contribution to make sure I have everything I need to know before I add my .02.

Fortunately, there aren’t many people who drive me that batty and as has been said, most have ended up banned anyway.

Annoying?

This message is hidden because Doctor Jackson is on your ignore list.

Use it. Sparingly. It’s been very helpful.

Those on my ignore list are (1) rarely quoted (2) most have been banned (3) or don’t post much anymore, or (4) not in threads I read. In one case a person has been removed from the ignore list.

This is a total of about 5 people in 5 years.

Don’t make me submit a search! I’ll do it!

Does the board software allow you to ignore a Moderator?

I just experimented:
Sorry *moderator name * is a moderator/admin and you are not allowed to ignore him or her.

The ability to do that might be a good idea for the SDMB fundraising thread.

Unless you’re a lady – then the world will get another puppy.

Some day I’m going to put the whole board on ignore and then sit here and talk to myself.

Um, Dr. Jack, you forgot to add me. :smack:

Yeh, but *we’ll *be able to see you. So, don’t start going into… uh… any deep thoughts, if you know what I mean.

It’s a useful feature on boards that permit image linking and/or avatars - there are usually a few members on such boards who pollute threads with posts containing multiple massive images that span wider than the page, but otherwise, no worthwhile content. Ignoring them allows you to see other images, but not be bothered by the stupidity.

On a primarily text-based board such as this, the ignore function is often more annoying than the person you’re ignoring - because it doesn’t completely hide the offender, it just puts a link in place of their post content.

Never had a need for it. Even the most annoying and aggravating posters usually have some redeeming features, or they are banned before I get that peeved with them. I’m quite capable of ignoring people without having to have software do it for me.

I’m ignoring multiple people. I come from Usenet, and I don’t think it’s at all strange to have a killfile (a list of people you’ve instructed your software to help you ignore) as long as my arm. But then many parts of Usenet are unmoderated and full of batshit crazy raving loons. My philosophy is really simple: I have a right to hear or not hear whoever I choose (with some very few limitations). My right to not hear you absolutely trumps your right to speak, as long as I don’t try to impose my filtering on anyone else.

The single quickest thing you can do to get yourself on my ignore list is to put your reply above what you are replying to, as opposed to below (which is, happily, the standard here). I have no patience for seeing the reply before the context.

Oh, really?

I have one user one my ignore list. About two years now. I originally decided to let it go a year, took it off, and reinstated it a week later. No regrets, and no other serious candidates for inclusion.
