Months ago I bought a turntable off the Home shopping Network. I hooked it up to our stereo system, and it has nice new speakers.
But the turntable is in a wooden bookcase, next to a window–we live in a mobile home and we don’t have much choice about where to position a tall bookcase. There are several shelves above the turntable. It’s possible to lift the tuntable lid, but difficult to set up fixed lighting to illuminate the inside of the unit to see the rotating tuntable, the tone arm, the switches or other controls.
What’s the best kind of lighting to use for this?
12 volt kitchen under cabinet lighting. Mount it under the shelf above the turntable. Also, take the lid off the turntable. It’s a possible record scratcher if you can’t open it all the way.
120 volt flexible rope lighting. Great stuff.
That’s some cool stuff, Whuck. I’m gonna use some on my next kitchen remodel. I like the prices, too.
Back in the day they made slides, like for a drawer that you could pull your turn table out to use.
I’d consider using LEDs
Rope lights are LEDs. They
re really easy to use and they give off a surprising amount of light. They can be cut to various lenghts by the user and bent very tightly to fit about anywhere.
Whuckfistle, the really pricey rope lights may be cuttable. The $ 6.99 ones I get my kids at Wal Mart are not. They have moulded ends that can either terminate and complete, or plug into the next section of rope lights.
Personally, for clarity of view I would go with the ideas NoClueBoy had. ( He’s got a clue, his name notwithstanding ). Get a very small thin fluorescent unit. You can mount it into the slot where the turntable is.
I removed my cover when I tucked my turntable into a shelt I’d mounted, in an antique t.v. cabinet that stores all of the stereo components so I don’t have a leviathan hump of anodized black metal and wires in one corner of the living room.
It did just fine with no lid, too. Right up to the day when the evil satanic cat Bumper, leapt up into that slot, got spooked and jumped out hard, demolishing the tonearm.
Cartooniverse
I paid $30 for 18 feet of it and it came with two end caps and two plugs. It could be cut into 18-inch segments if needed. I think the LED`s are spaced about 1 inch apart. I got clear rope for the best illumination. Not too pricey, I think.
But the link you provided says, “Flexilight is comprised of 1/2 watt long lasting micro tungsten bulbs.” Tungsten bulbs are not the same as light emitting diodes.
This site explains there is a difference. (And here.)
You can find LED rope lights here and here.
Peace.
You LED up my life.
** moriah** thanks for catching that. I linked the search result from work. The one I am more familiar with is at the home computer.
