I'm A.C. damn it! Get off the Road!

This is probably not helpful in the least but WTF

OJ Simpson was a celebrity who killed 2 people near his Brentwood home in California. The ensuing media free for all was seen all over the world. It didn’t matter that there were worse murders or crimes that made his actions pail in comparison, it was a circus. There was a big man taking a big fall. While the trial was going on there was hardly any news of any other murders or crimes of that nature. That’s not because there weren’t any crimes, it’s just that there weren’t any with the celebrity factor that could bring in those huge ratings.
The war in Iraq is similar. There have not been massive killings or disasters that have been seen in other conflicts yet the world is in a unified protest. There was another war that many of us may remember, the war in Rwanda. In this conflict, perhaps one of the worse in recent history, millions are said to have died. There was evidence of genocide. Were there worldwide protests that shut down cities? No. Were there arguments in the UN that created rifts between allies? No. Why? How in the world could millions die and the world not notice? Were there no catch phrases to rhyme along to? And how come the United States goes to war with around 2000 dead overall (so far) and we are made out to be the Devil himself?
It’s the OJ factor. No matter how small the crime is if you are a celebrity the media and people will put blinders on to everything else in order to watch the mighty when they fall. The protestors are not protesting the act as much as they are protesting the actor. The United States has become OJ. We are not innocent, but we are far from being as guilty as the many others who have, and are guilty of things much more horrific. But those countries or groups are not household names, so there are no virtuous protestors shouting and screaming for their downfall.

Er, quite. What I want to know is, who’s A. C.?

BTW, the world certainly did notice the Rwanda masscres, and horrible as they were, I don’t think any credible source claims that ‘millions’ died.

Air Conditioner? Maybe in your contect, AutoCannon. You like Battletech? How about the atrocity on Kentares perpatrated by Shiro Kurita?

Now that was a massacre!

To the 911 operator from the LA freeways:

“This is A.C.! I got O.J. in the car! (pause) This is A.C.! You know who this is, dammit!

– Al Cowlings
kp, the US isn’t just a celebrity - there’s a fascination, and fear, about its power and the use thereof.

>BTW, the world certainly did notice the Rwanda masscres, and horrible as they were, I don’t think any credible source claims that ‘millions’ died.<

Right, that number is misleading

The list goes on how about the congo war, 3.5 million dead since 1998 and not one organized rally, nothing. Not one of these anti-war people cared. period.

Its obvious that we need not pay attention to the protestors if they are not paying attention to humans, they only pay attention the the media bit in their mouths. shame – they care only about retribution against the us and not a lick about people.:dubious:

Maybe part of the reason for some of the protests is that since such atrocities did occur, under regimes even more despicable than that of Saddam Hussain, and that there still exist such other regimes, the US has decided that Iraq is the greatest priority on the ‘crimes against humanities’ rule.

It points to a lack of consistancy, this war was supposed to be about WOMD but when little or no definative proof has been provided, the grounds for attacking Iraq were heavily augmented by showing what an evil regime exists there and that it would be a good thing because Iraqi people would be freed from a despot.

The EVIL REGIME[sup]tm[/sup] does not seem to have been sufficient grounds for invading many other countries, some, including Iraq were backed by the US, so many folk draw the conclusion that it is just a strategic oil war, but with the added spice of possibly alienating many others who were previously not radicalised.

The world is supposed to be a safer place post GWII, but somehow this looks unlikely.

We both know that the Grey Death Legion was responsible for the Kentares V massacre, Gorgon Heap. Those habitation domes were perfectly safe from Kurita.

[sub]I’m going to go cry now. There is no reason on God’s green earth why I just said that.[/sub]
