I have longish straight thick fine hair. If I washed it every day, it’d dry out to the point of falling out of my scalp. I don’t shower every day for the same reason – usually ever other, except in the summer, when I at least do a quick rinse every day. And NO I do not smell. I usually wash my hair about ever third day. More than that and it starts feeling icky, but I’ve noticed it’s at it’s most cooperative for a couple of days AFTER I wash it. Not the day I do.
I’m in the ranks of “Can’t was hair everyday otherwise I end up with a rats’ nest” posters. When I had much more hair than I do now (lost a lot after having LilMiss) and it was quite long, washing it everyday was impossible. It would take over an hour to comb out. My hair can be quite curly, and when it’s humid out I have a serious Shirley Temple thing going on.
When I had it all cut off (over 2’ worth of it), life became much easier. Now it’s almost shoulder length, and I’m debating whacking it off again just for simplicities sake.
I have to wash my hair at least every three days. Weirdly enough, I get cradle cap on the nape of my neck. If it’s hot and humid, it will come on in a few days. Another benefit of having short hair- sweat doesn’t pool back there. If I wash it more frequently, though, my scalp dries out and I end up with dandruff.
I have done the dry shampoo bit before (baby powder), and it does work in a pinch, such as when camping. I have heard the Bumble & Bumble is fabulous.
My hair is pretty durned curly. Lately I’ve been washing and conditioning it every other day or so, but I’m willing to try the conditioning-only thing for a while. I’m just wondering…does that contribute at all to dandruff?
Week one went by with only one hairwashing. I can’t say I felt yucky at all.
Now, I never thought I’d ever have any natural curl to my hair. Or even a decent wave. But I did notice that it bends slightly when it grows below my shoulders. And I’m talking slightly. That’s why I was so surprised to see that I could get some cool waves to my hair when I treated it properly. I think the whole idea behind the method is that you never give your hair a chance to go straight. Its never actually brushed through, just picked. And its dried gently with a towel, never a hair dryer. Voila – waves. Not corkscrew curls – I’ll never have those. But a lot more bounce and body.
I talked to my mother about this: she’s a hair stylist for older ladies. She goes round to nursing homes and does the ladies’ hair for free. She told me of one woman who gets a permanent every three months. That’s the only time she ever gets her hair washed. What she does do, is brush it a lot. My mother said her hair was beautiful; not greasy at all.
I’m sure it has a lot do with the type of hair you have, whether or not you can go for three months without washing your hair:). I’d go nuts.
And horseflesh, I may not have been boring with straight hair, but with wavy hair, I’m RIVETING.
