I could see myself staying where I am, at least geographically. Next 10 years will encompass my son’s high school and college years, and I think moving would disrupt his life too much. As far as job goes, I could easily stay where I am but worry about becoming too complacent.

Grill cook, service station attendant, house painter, shipping department at an industrial pump company - packing and arranging shipping for pumps, valve bodies and parts. Got on at the phone company as a teletype clerk, then an office clerk, customer serice rep, cable splicer. Went to college, working as a computer operator for the school, then as a programmer and operator. After school, worked as a database specialist, then did systems integration programming, then some cross-platform coding for the accounting system, then a lot of quick-n-dirty stuff…mostly assembler/IMS…for special projects, marketing, new subsidiaries and stuff. The got encourage to retire (otherwise you migh lose your health insurance), so I did.
I think my best stuff was the systems programming I did. Some the the databse system support stuff I wrote was used 24 hours a day for nearly 20 years.

Smoking abstinence was achieved by 20 percent in the simultaneous group, 17 percent of the sequential group and 10 percent of the control group.
More participants in the simultaneous group also reached the goal of increased physical activity (33 percent), followed by the sequential group (27 percent) and the control group (23 percent).

Early life:
- Various fast food joints on cash and food prep Hated them all.
- Coles book store. Rather liked that job, actually. Discount on books and dibs on new releases.
- Offset printing at Castlefield Printing, doing printing, typesetting, collating, folding, etc. Messy work. Smelly too, thanks to copious use of naphthalene (blanket wash) and toluene (rubber rejuvenator).
Middling life:
-
Jana Technologies, where I was the only other employee besides Jay, the owner. My job was to download everything in sight and have those files sent for pressing and duplication on CD for a CD-ROM a Month club. For this I was paid $5/hr, and that was only when Jay got around to actually paying me. I only stayed there for a couple of months because I couldn’t take the constantly late paycheques.
-
More offset printing. Don’t remember the name of this place.
-
Concierge at King’s Landing, a hoity-toity condo complex on the waterfront. It had its moments. I met some famous people. (Several of the Blue Jays and Raptors, Peter Gzowski (famous CBC radio personality), and Paul Magder, Toronto’s infamous furrier who became well known in the papers for constantly flouting Toronto’s Sunday shopping laws before they were changed, which I’m sure he had something to do with.)
-
More offset printing, don’t remember the name of this place, either.
-
Still more offset printing, don’t remember the name of this place, either.
-
Most recent life:
-
Even more offset printing, Canada Press Ltd.
-
Future Shop. Software department. Pay sucked, but the work was okay for the first while. Then it got sucky after the Best Buyout.
-
CCCT Computers. Computer sales. Lasted a month, and they only paid once a month, but at least they paid me in cash under the table. I think I was the only non-Asian they ever hired.
-
Factory Direct, a merchant of refurb and close-out merchandise. I was a PC tech. Job sucked a metric ton of ass for a variety of reasons that I won’t get into.
-
Black & Decker, at a factory outlet, first as retail sales, then as service rep. The former paid okay but was part time and the manager gave most of the hours to the friends of his that he hired. The latter paid very well, but went to hell when the company bought out the Pentair Group (which included Delta/Porter Cable, DeVilbiss and Simonize pressure washers). Thanks to one or two dumbass managers to put the store way down in the red, they let a lot of people go, including me.
-
My current job, which I will not name for obvious reasons. Customer service rep. They pay well, the folks are great, the job is good. I’m happy here.
9. Who for president - Arnie, Morgan Freeman, Jim Carrey, Stephen Fry.
Oh, tough one. I’m torn between Fry and Freeman. In the end though I think I have to go with Freeman. Fry is funny, but Freeman kicks seven kinds of ass.

11. What is your answer to the previous poster’s question 10?

1. What were you thinking before you saw this thread?
I’m hungry.
2. What is in your pocket/wallet/handbag?
Well, you asked.
Pocket 1: Cigarettes and lighter, three pens, Marlboro key chain with work keys, personal key ring with keys and two remote fob thingies, a shopping list that never got used, the phone number to Root Photographers that I have no intention of using, and a sheet of paper that has a note about some question I wanted to ask in GQ.
Pocket 2: Cell phone, comb, phone book currently in use, new phone book I intend to copy the old one into, a green spiral bound pad with various notes I’ve made that I’m not sure why I have anymore, work badge, school badge (they’re on the same hook thingy) and a notice from the Barrington Police Explorers about the Shop with a Cop fundraiser coming up that my son is volunteering at.
Pocket 3: Checkstub, Son’s new ATM card (I have to activate it), a list of songs for the jukebox at the bar, and three paid bills (AT&T, MSL, Bon Appetit).
Pocket 4: Another list of songs for the jukebox at the bar, a receipt from Panera Bread, some pamphlet from Smoker’s Warehouse (if my husband actually thinks I’m going to do business with these people he’s insane), my wallet, and my change purse. Oh - and a pen.
Pocket 5: Old carbon set of checks (numbers 851-875), marriage certificate with a ton of other important papers stuffed inside it, anniversary card from my husband I mentioned in another thread, a pencil drawing I did of my dog, and a black makeup case type of pouch that I keep small but important papers in (business cards, scraps of paper with addresses on 'em, a bracelet I love and wear now and then) rather than keeping them loose or throwing them away because I’m psychologically disturbed (for lack of a better word) enough to believe that “I’m going to really NEED this someday” and don’t want to lose it so I better keep it on me."
Little zippered section: An emery board, a dryer sheet (this works GREAT when you get to work and your winter coat has your sweater all staticy - I just rub the dryer sheet on it - instant no static!), a mini sewing kit, and a vending machine card from work.
Now, aren’t you glad you asked?
