I'm an old Canadian and America is starting to freak me out

Back in the 60s, my peers(baby boomers) in Canada and the US seemed so progressive. We united in opposition to Vietnam and support for civil rights .

Thanks to Donald Trump it appears that a substantial group of these peers now have a great difficulty with having a black or female president and ready to fuck over the world with a peeping tom groping sexual deviant ready to take us back to the middle ages. I call it “Radical Christianity” and the followers are “Crusaders” who want to surprise bomb the fuck out of Mosul like Trump’s beloved Russians are doing to Aleppo.

And that is just the beginning. NATO and Europe is in jeopardy, Asian alliances are in jeopardy, the threat of tactical use of nuclear weapons by both Russia and America is now on the horizon.

I could go on and on but it is clear to me that a radical angry America is emerging and it will stop at nothing to regain the exclusive privilege that many white Americans feel they are entitled to and take us all down in the process

Oh, to the Trump supporters who read this : Go fuck yourself !!!

He’s coming to your house first!

A true Canadian would have said “Please go fuck yourself !!!”, then “Sorry”.

I think a lot of us Americans got a wake up call about just how racist, sexist and just plain hate-filled our own nation is. Yeah, we knew it was always thus, but we kidded ourselves, saying most people weren’t racist, they were just ignorant, etc.

Nope. We were wrong. We’re still chest deep in hate and bigotry. :frowning:

Sure … 1960’s were a great time … Malcolm X, MLK Jr., John Kennedy, Robert Kennedy … it was a better time when we could properly deal with our outspoken politicians … Birmingham, Watts, Orangeburg, Newark, Chicago’s Democratic Convention … we were a kinder people back then … Guatemala, Cuba, Vietnam, Rhodesia, Israel, Czechoslovakia … we were so close to World Peace …

Thank you for reminding us who we once were …

What kind of moron pines for the days when Presidential candidates were murdered in cold blood?

I’m an American, and I understand your point.

I’ve always had this vision of what America is. We’re the “good guys”. We defend the downtrodden, the bullied. We get involved where maybe we shouldn’t, but it is in the service of making the world a better place. Even during times we don’t live up to our own ideals, the ideals are still there. And they’ll come through eventually.

If Trump gets elected, I’ll wonder if I even am an American. Because it would be true that the ideals I hold as those that make us great are not held by the majority of us. I’d be a stranger in my own land.

Fortunately, I have guns. To defend me from the “patriots”.

Once the baby boomers die off enough, things should start to improve. They have been in control too long and are trump’s biggest supporters. Once they are no longer a voting power and also not the majority of our politicians, things will improve.

Phaw … someday, you Gen-x’ers will grow up and have kids of your own … then you’ll see … and I hope they treat you as disrespectfully as you treat us.

I feel your vibe.

Being a Canadian these days feels like living over a meth lab!

We’re not all like that, but too many are…and far too fucking many appease them in order to stay in power.

There’s a dispiriting number of houses in my town with Trump signs. What’s truly flummoxing is quite a few have “stop the airpark” signs, too, in protest to the affluent family that wants to build one around here.

How this cognitive dissonance does shred their brains in twain is a mystery for the ages.

BTW, any you canucks got a room for rent?

I didn’t know that Canadians said “fuck”.
I am shocked.

Chill the fuck out already. Trump is not going to win. Even if he somehow does win, it will make no perceptible difference in your daily life. You’re a fucking Canadianstanigan. Your country gets along with everybody. The rest of the world will look forward to your stories about your crazy neighbor. And Trump probably won’t nuke you by accident. I hope.

No, you didn’t. It may have seemed that way because of the loudmouthery involved, but neither issue had universal support from any cohort, including boomers.

There are a lot of fucking misconceptions in American pop culture, though considering the number of Canadians employed in its creation, maybe that’s partly our fucking fault, sorry.

Possibly me - I’ll tell you next Wednesday.

That was my first thought too. I guess I should get looking before the rush.

I grew up in the 70’s with progressive teachers and Sesame Street. There was nothing Americans couldn’t do if we wanted to. It was the greatest country in the world. I was told that the civil rights battle had been won and that we were all one big rainbow of people who loved each other. To some extent I held on to that notion until this year. Now I wonder if I’ve been on happy pills all this time, because there are clearly millions who disagree. And they’re the ones calling themselves patriots?

How long till you build a wall and make us pay for it?

I think you need to do a search for Tom Hanks’ “America’s Dad” monologue from Saturday Night Live.

They’ll build a wall and make all the new ex-pat Americans pay for it!
