I'm ashamed I don't know all the acronyms

Sorry, I’ve been posting often but I still don’t know all the acronyms in the message boards.

I only know two of them:

IMHO - In my humble opinion
IIRC - If I remember correctly (is this correct?)

I’ve seen others: WAG, FWIW, and there may be more. Can you give me a list, please? (this has to be a short thread, I think).

I found that link in this ATMB thread, where other frequently asked questions are answered.

You’re right, IIRC stands for If I Recall Correctly. Also, Grousser, you might do better with this thread in ATMB, where amore’s linked you to. That’s the appropriate forum for questions like this. You might want to e-mail a moderator and have them move this thread there.

Why bother? The mods can move it themselves.

To answer the question… WAG == Wind Assed Guess, FWIW == For What It’s Worth

(BTW is By The Way, IANAL is I Am Not A Lawyer (The L changes to other letters, depending on the subject at hand)…uhm…damn, that’s the only ones I can think of offhand.)

NTBUSWAB— Not To Bring Up Star Wars Again, But…

ROTFL = Rolling On The Floor Laughing

ROTFLSHISTC = Rolling On The Floor Laughing So Hard I Scared The Cat

YMMV = “Your Mileage May Vary” and not “you make me vomit”, which is what I thought The Gaspode had said to me

Not to be anal retentive, nitpicking, etc. but the word acronym is quite often misused. An acronym has to form a pronouncible word with the letters being used.

Examples) LASER is an acronym
FBI is an abbreviation.

Sorry. Just thought you’d like to know that subtle difference.

While FBI is an abbreviation, it belongs to a subset of abbreviations known as initialisms, a term which better reflects the fact that the initial (first) letters of the component words are pronounced individually, rather than spoken as a single word, as an acronym is.

I’ve always seen it as “Wild Assed Guess”. “Wind Assed” makes no sense to me.

WOW - and someone ends up correcting me!!!
Thank you. I always like to learn new things.
Really, you won’t learn if you think you know everything.
Thanks again word-meister !!

Because it really helps. If you see a thread that you believe doesn’t belong in the forum it is posted to, please do inform the moderators, either over email or through the “Report this post to a moderator” link. It greatly improves our response time.

We appreciate your help.

:stuck_out_tongue: Typo.

(But if wind assed doesn’t make sense to you… Well, I envy you, actually.)

BTW - by the way
IMHO - in my humble opinion
FAQ - frequently asked questions (a general information guide)
SO - signifigant other
RTFM - read the flargbargin manual (usually in response to a really inane or obvious question)
WTF - I have such an unbelievably limited imagination, something this trivial completely blows my mind. :stuck_out_tongue:

A couple of old standbys:
QED - quod erat demonstratum - basicaly means the poster has finished explaining the point he/she was making
SSDD - same s***, different day

I believe the conjugation is quod erat demonstrandum.

You can check the conjugation analysis with William Whitaker’s Latin-English dictionary program.

demonstrandum

demonstratum

BTW, I never heard the term initialism before amore. Thanks for providing that clarification.

Gotta say though, they’ve been running pretty well the past few months…
