I'm claiming Longest Name on the Board!

Nice searching, though.
This board Does like research.

I’m pretty sure all the longer names aren’t on that list yet. I’ve seen a lot of long ones just since I’ve been here, which isn’t long at all.

I gotta say, the names do reflect a lot of different interests.
I guess long names are really fun for a lot of people.

I didn’t pick this name to test the character limit of the board, nor to be able to say “Look at me I’ve got the longest screen name!”(in fact I didn’t even think about that until this thread came up and further didn’t think it was anywhere near that long until it was pointed out). I took this name because it was the name I was given on the snopes board. I was just using Nanook at first, until a fellow Long Islander dubbed me Nanook of the North Shore. I’ve been using the long version on this board since I started, and was using it on snopes up until I stopped posting there around the time I found this one.

Let me start out by saying that complaints about moderators or how this board is run belong in the Pit. That’s explicitly stated in the forum lists. I don’t care if you think that the pit “bores you” or if you think you are above posting in the Pit. The simple fact is, part of the Pit’s raison d’etre is for people to complain about mods, even if those complaints are rare. Bitching about mods in the ATMB is inappropriate and therefore threads doing this may be subject to closure or deletion at the moderator’s discretion. That’s nothing new.

We are very suspicious of anyone who tries to push the limits of their screen name. People with very short screen names, blank spaces for screen names, very long screen names, stolen screen names, practically similar screen names, etc have all shown that they have less than good intentions towards this board.

Exactly, Nanook. Thank you. The posters that Do and Soul have listed didn’t pick their name just to see how long they could make it, or at very least they weren’t stupid enough to admit it publicly. So that’s our motivation as moderators.

You would lose that bet.

I post the way I do beacuse I’m trying to appear nice? Alphagene? Ha!

Well, duh… we banned you. Of course you wouldn’t do something lame like try to come back under a different screen name just to bitch about how this board sucks and the mods are evil, would you? Didn’t think so. That would be pathetic.

I think you missed Sangria’s point entirely.

She wasn’t banned until just now, above. That’s why she was able to post there.

As for Nanook of the North Shore having a noble reason for his name, either long names are a genuine problem or they aren’t.

If they are, then the laundry list of people above should be cut back, too.
I personally doubt that the “long name” problem can be so bad if there are already so many people with long names.

I’m guessing JimB could live with one more.

Um, no anna. I think you are missing the point.

She was banned by the time I posted, hon.

Why? Because you say so? I don’t think so. The fact is, someone tried to see how long a name she could make. This is discouraged. Then Sangria admitted that it was her trying to register more than one screen name. This is explicitly a no-no. So she was banned.

We take everything on a case by case basis. In this case, the OP’s intent was enough to ask him to reconsider his name.

quote:

either long names are a genuine problem or they aren’t.

Why? Because you say so?
This seems to be a question I have too.
The intent of the OP was stated as to get a new name to avoid harassment. The answer seemed to be that long names are a problem.

I’ve got a long name. I have no ulterior motive. Do I have to change it or not?

The big problem was that she had two names at the same time, a violation of forum rules.

Thanks TubaDiva

Sorry to be a bother. Thanks for reinstating me. I will skip the Pit for a long time, I’m sure.

Well, geez Louise. An entire thread full of people who are completely missing the point. Is it on purpose, do ya just wanna rumble, or are you all just the kind of people who go through life eternally missing the point?

Here’s the point, boys and girls–nobody ever said you couldn’t have a nick longer than 12 characters. The point is that it’s obnoxious for posters to try to push the edge of the envelope by purposely selecting user names that are incredibly long. Okay, ha ha, that’s a funny joke, we get it, now get a name change, okay, so it doesn’t screw up the word wrap needlessly, forever and ever amen.

But if you’ve got a real, genuine, personal reason for needing a long user name, then for heaven’s sake, nobody here has a problem with that. Okay?

As for Danielinthewolvesden, his nick was a highly personal choice, made some time ago, long before the subject of long user names came up, and it was not chosen merely to tweak the administration and provide low-class entertainment for the more clueless segment of the SDMB population. “Ha ha, up yours, Ed Zotti, I’ve got a really long user name and you can’t stop me!”

Here’s another point, which may have gotten lost in the shuffle, what with everybody being so busy with their own little Personal Grievance Committees–posters get banned not because one or more of the moderators conceives of a vicious Sicilian-style vendetta against them, but because they have two user names. Duh.

Get with the program, people, even if the program in question does have to be closed-captioned for the point-comprehending-impaired.

And as for a name change not ensuring security from “troll hunters”–well, of course not, Susie Q. The only way the Straight Dope Message Board COULD guarantee your safety from “troll hunters” would be for you to enter the Federal Witness Protection Program, thus forsaking all your former habits, including posting to the Straight Dope Message Board. You don’t like “troll hunters”? Fine, whyncha check out marthastewart.com? I understand Martha runs a real tight ship over there–any troll hunters that show up are promptly covered with glue and cut-out pictures from magazines and turned into end tables.

You always want to start fights, don’t you?

Why give me a bunch of insults?

The ORIGINAL problem was stated by TubaDiva in her first post above, that the name was “objectionable”. The only hint of why it was objectionable was the “12 character” part. I can see no other objectionable part.

I was NEVER trying to “push the envelope”. That’s just no so. I just wanted a new name, because of the likes of you.

I don’t answer to you and I won’t have you dumping on me. Go back to the pit and leave me alone. TubaDiva has spoken, and I shouldn’t have to keep answering trollhunters.

Welcome back.
I can’t see how that name you wanted was objectionable either, (it seemed like just fun, actually) but everything has a context, and the mods wer just seeing a different one than you.

As for Duck Duck Goose, I’m surprised.
I’ve been telling people he’s reformed.
I think he basically is (I’ve noticed him sicking up for 7of7 in the pit), so cut him some slack too.

We’re all here to have fun and avoid jerks.
It’s just that everybody has a different idea about what that means, exactly.

That line should read:**
I think he basically is (I’ve noticed him sticking up for 7of7 in the pit), so cut him some slack too. **

Well, shitfire, Anna, and here I was, enjoying the mental image of myself sicking up for 7 or 7. “Puke!” he commands, and obediently I puke. “Good duck! Here’s a biscuit! Okay, now, puke the biscuit! Good duck!”

Sangria, sweetie, maybe if I had some clue as to who you used to be, I might have an additional clue as to huccome you got some kinda problem with me. As it is, I suppose I’ll just have to remain gloriously clueless. [sigh] I guess it’s just my fate, to be puking and clueless.

And P.S. to everybody who seems to have missed my MPSIMS thread coming out of the closet as the proud possessor of ovaries instead of testicles–um…

This is the trouble with you trollhunters. (And not just the incoherence.)

You take several shots at Sangria for nothing, then complain
“huccome you got some kinda problem with me”.

What are you, stupid? Or have you really had a stroke? The question should be “Why wouldn’t she resent you for being a jerk right on this thread?”

You give me the creeps. If you were ever reformed, I never saw it. And if you had a sex change, that still won’t explain your lack of perspective.

No, DDG did not have a sex change… She always was female, in the first place. However, until recently, she had given the impression on the board that she was male. Recently, she admitted the truth. No surgery required. And if I may ask, reformed from what? I never realized that she needed to reform from anything.

Perhaps not as DDG, but NTM was quite a fighter, always hitting people with bricks. Not clever, but crude.

This is just way too much for About This Message Board.

AND it’s degenerated into something we did not ask for, fistfighting.

So I’m going to close this thread, it’s not appropriate for this forum – and it’s pointless.

To sum up, especially for those in this thread that really really need to get a clue:

  1. Nobody said “12 characters or less, absolute.” I threw that up as an EXAMPLE and now I’m really sorry, for some of you took it as a threat. It’s not.

Think of it in terms of “do unto others,” if you’d give a little thought to your fellow forum members when you came up with your name, it’s not nice to make other people have to scroll around to read something. It’s annoying when it happens to you, isn’t it?

It’s also not nice to be so freaking cryptic we can’t tell who or what your screen name is. A few characters but not a War-and-Peace-sized-screen name is NOT too much to ask for; you got a world of choices in between.

  1. It’s not a contest for longest or shortest, haven’t you heard, it ain’t the meat, it’s the motion?

“I have a dream . . . that one day all posters will live on a board where they are judged not by the length of their screen names but by the content of their postings.”

  1. Contrary to what some of you might believe, this is not a democracy and the majority does not rule, as the majority does not administrate or moderate this board (although, I have to admit, some of our Teeming Millions are very very helpful and we could not do without them, I especially appreciate those that share their knowledge and expertise with others, in this forum and elsewhere. Y’all are the greatest!).

You are absolutely entitled to your personally held opinions about “trolls/troll hunters,” but you know what? It doesn’t matter. It’s not an issue for argument here.

In fact, from this day forward I’m gonna delete any such arguments I find on this subject in ATMB. You dislike something we do? Take it to the Pit.
