I'm curious. What does "Humboldt" bring to mind for you?

Absolutely nothing.

In various works of fiction the authors referr to “Humbodlt Figurines”? That’s what sprung to my mind, but I am not entirely sure what they are. I get visions of small porcelain Bo-Peep figures etc.

Humboldt, Saskatchewan. Home to my friend LuRita (pronounced Loretta).

I also think of Humbolt Humbolt from Lolita.

Are you thinking of Hummel figurines? Examples here.

I, too, think of marijuana. And I don’t smoke it, either. I had a friend that lived in San Diego during our high school years. She told me that Humboldt was where the best pot came from.

This could just be my ignorance showing, but is there a Highway 420 in Humboldt? I mean, I see t-shirts with the highway symbol on them, with Humboldt written on it somewhere, but this is just a design for a t-shirt, right?

Humbolt is a very pretty place in No. CA.

The first thing that springs to mind is fields of resin-heavy, sticky, purpley-green pot. Ohh yeeaahh! (Cue Cypress Hill’s Hits from the Bong…) (FWIW, I don’t smoke, and haven’t in years. Just for the record.)

Then fog, and redwoods. I adore redwoods.

(China Guy, re: “where men are men and so are the women” - :D)

I guess it makes me think of Saul Bellow’s novel, “Humboldt’s Gift.” I can’t recall hearing the name in any other context.

It makes me think of hippies. I know a lot of people that go or are going to go to Humboldt State University here in California; for some reason I just think modern-day hippies.

Cute hippie girls. And I’ve never even been there.

Wasn’t his name Humbert Humbert?

Perhaps (I really don’t remember), but it’s been years since I read it.
Either way, I still think of Lolita.

Squid.

Firesign Theater: Temporarily Humboldt County.

Humboldt Park, in Chicago. My parents lived there 45 years ago, and my son lived there about a year ago. Crappy, yet affordable!

Cobalt.

Humboldt Coils. Always the scientist I’m afraid

First thing to mind is the current.

Then the famous geographer.

And last, the penguin.

Highway 101 runs through Humboldt County, CA. 420 (or 4:20) is a drug reference. IIRC, Police code for possession and/or the time when most folk light up.

Humbolt Park in Chicago, where I am moving in less than a month into my friend’s groovy house.
