I'm curious. What does "Humboldt" bring to mind for you?

There was a Huboldt St. in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, which is where I used to live.

Hey STUYGUY … what year were you? I went to stuy for a little while.

Kallessa: I’m not related to any Etters or Frenches, but I know many. We also stayed at the Etter Cabin out on the Lost Coast during our backpacking trip.

My family migrated into Humboldt from Orange County in the early 70’s. I was about 3 when we made the move. My parents decided to buy a piece of land, sight unseen, within 50 miles of the town where they had honeymooned, which was Shelter Cove.

I attended Ferndale High, so I’m well aquainted with St. Bernards. Both being small schools for the area, we were pitted against eachother with a lot of atheletic rivalry, at least when I was in school. I graduated in 1991. Another uniquely Humboldt memory…Ferndale being the dairy town, St. Bernards being a Catholic school…it was always the hicks vs the preppies. I honestly recall posters hanging in the gym during St. Bernard’s basketball games that read, “Nice blazers, boys!” (St. Bernard’s has a dress code) and “We like our hat-rings!.” (It was rare that the guys from Ferndale high were without their John Deere baseball caps, or the infamous ring-around-the-head dents in their hair). High School…ah the idiocy.

karomon: Class of '77.

pfft. Too early for me. Not even born yet. I’ll go back to my crib and pacifier now.

Humbolt in N. California. Arcata. Eureka. Ferndale. Redwoods. I. Love. Humboldt.

While after my last post I reread the thread and found your earlier post, I’m glad I did ask and glad that you did reply, honeydewgrrl. It sounds like a lovely place. Unfortunately I’ve never heard of it, but then, I’ve not yet visited California.

Okay, I’m bumping the thread with a couple of movie cameo appearances regarding the word of mouth phenom that is “Humboldt”.

Wonder Boys:

James and Grady (Maguire and Douglas) are sitting in a parked car. James (Douglas) is in the driver’s seat and asks Grady (Maguire) to reach into the glove-box for his “stash”. Grady sniffs the baggie, and asks, “Humboldt?”

I have a theory about young Mr. Maguire’s “vegetarian” tendancies and I think that might have been a bit of improv…

It is worth seeing if you haven’t.

And of course, Homegrown :

John Lithgow’s character, Malcolm, is landing on a coastal cliff in his helecopter, speaking into his trusty personal recorder.

“…Oh…and find out what’s going on up in Humboldt…” That’s not a direct quote. I haven’t seen the flick in a few years, but it is a good rental IMHO

County in NorCal. Lots of trees and stuff. Used to be that the best weed came from there when it was still mostly grown outdoors.
