I always got along with Olentzero, and we held for each other’s views a healthy if arms-length respect. I respected his views because he did not mince them up into flowery talk. He would seize a man’s property for what he perceived to be the common good, and he would not pretend he was doing anything else. He knew that taxation was theft, but he considered it to be a sort of romanticized Robin Hood duty to commit such theft. He was an honest leftist, and I will miss him.

FWIW, I will miss Olentzero. He adds a perspective that I find very different from what I normally encounter in everyday life. I always found it interesting and refreshing.

You’re letting a most likely insane poster’s drive-by comment be what drives you away from the board? O-kay, see you then.
Let me emphasize that it’s not simply New Iskander’s post that has made me decide to break it off completely. Over the past year or so, there’s developed a small coterie of arch-conservative posters who have found it acceptable, based on their strong disagreement with my poltical stance, to try to discredit me as a contributor to this board based on their perceptions of hypocrisy by contrasting my arguments on a particular subject with what they believe they understand about my political beliefs. It’s called “Red-baiting”, and has been the source of many a physical headache for me.
Some posters are long gone; some, like Shodan, have been long-term practitioners; some, like RTFirefly and Guinastasia - whom I respected at one time - are unfortunate newcomers to the list. I can see it coming with posters like Brutus and Bruce_Daddy. There always seems to be one more further down the pike. And, being the only outspoken revolutionary Socialist on the board, it’s easy to be a target for whoever hasn’t already become familiar with my posts and arguments yet.
Fortunately, this is not the only place in my life I express my political views, argue from a far left perspective, or talk about organizing on issues of social and economic justice. Unfortunately, this is the only place I get massive amounts of crap for it. (Well, Georgetown too, but that’s already seven years past.) I’d honestly thought about your suggestions that I take a break for several weeks or months, but I’m pretty sure than when I came back I’d find someone else saying “Holy fuck, an honest to God (ha) Lenin defender?” and it would start all over again. I’ve come to the conclusion that breaking it off from the SDMB, completely and irrevocably, is a sad but necessary decision. I have other, larger, far tastier fish to fry.
