I'm getting Lasik! Any experiences?

So I’m going in Friday, June 20th to get Lasik surgery on both my eyes. I have been researching this for over 2 years, so I’m not really looking for scientific input, just any experiences you might have had that will help me prepare and heal properly.

Thanks! Wish me luck!

I went under the laser 3 years ago - best thing I ever did for myself. It’s quick, relatively painless - keep your eyes closed for 2 hours and then open them to perfect vision. With respect to healing, you just have to wear some horrid-looking goggles for the first week (so you don’t rub your eyes in your sleep).

Good luck!

I suggest you ask for a face mask for yourself. Everybody around you has one, so either bring your own or demand one if it is not offered to you.

The reason being that you really do not want to worry about exhaling some bacteria-laden saliva and it landing on your cornea during the operation.

Other than that, follow their instructions as best as you can, and if you feel the slightest urge to sneeze or cough or anything else, loudly demand that they stop immediately.

The Controvert - that is EXACTLY the kind of thing I was looking for - I would never have thought of it, and it makes perfect sense.

Thanks!

My wife had it done two years ago. She had no problems with the surgery (slept the rest of the afternoon all doped up on Valium, and then was fine), and absolutely loves the results. Good luck!

I worked with a girl who had it done. She woke up to perfect vision the next day and was completely overcome with emotion. She had been wearing glasses since she was a little kid. Good luck!

I actually begged the nurse to give me just 1/4 of the Valium pill (can’t stand downers). I wanted to be awake to see clearly the first time! Downside was, you have to keep your eyes closed for 2 hours, and it was difficult without being drugged. However, when I opened my eyes, ten minutes later I drove to the store! I’d recommend skipping the Valium if you can. I saw several women being carried out of the clinic who obviously couldn’t handle the drug effect.

I did mine about 4 years ago, and no regrets.

It was a pretty freaky experience - no pain, just weird. So try to relax (if I gave you the details, you’d likely wig out even more).

But the one piece of advice I can give has to do with the post-op instructions. They gave me this whole list of “don’t do’s” and one of them was not taking a shower for like 3 days or something. So I asked about this. It turns out that what they’re most concerned about is having you scratch/rub your eyes while the flap is re-attaching itself. So the issue has nothing to do with water, soap, or shampoo per se. It has to do with what most people do when soap or shampoo gets in their eyes - they rub them ! So I was told I could shower so long as I was careful not to rub my eyes.
Not that I wear makeup, but this is also the reason for the no eye makeup rule. It has nothing to do with makeup, but rather how people remove eye makeup - they rub it off.

I think everyone’s post procedure experience is different. I went through this period of about 2 months where my focusing would change in the mornings. It had to do with fluid buildup as I slept, and then in the morning, the focusing would fluctuate as the fluid leaked out. This gradually got better and better, and then finally went away.

Hope this helps. After 27 years of wearing glasses, the results were nothing short of miraculous.
