I'm going on indefinite hiatus from the Dope

Ehhhhhh, I’d argue that it can potentially be useful (to the board’s management and the posters who do care) and pointless (to most posters in general).

The main problem is that there’s no ideal way to have these posts. An individual thread per each user is going overboard, but a sticky for “Dopers Leaving” that could be updated by posters would probably not be noticed (and I could see it clogged up by trolls or overly-dramatic posters who leave and come back after like, a few days).

But if someone thinks, “I wonder what happened to (name); s/he was cool and then they just stopped posting,” it’d be awesome to have a quickref with a brief mention that (name) had twins and got too busy, has an illness, got annoyed at something, etc.

And for board management, it can (in general, anyway) be useful to see why users leave and look for potential concerns they might want to address. Kind of like a business wanting to know if their controversial commercial/reformulation/whatever is motivating customers to leave. If people rant about how offensive the commercial is but they remain customers afterward, they don’t need to spend marketing money apologizing, etc.; if those people actually do leave/boycott because of the commercial in significant numbers, it may be worthwhile to do so. So if board management could see that no, really, a LOT of posters have left because of (insert dissatisfaction here) and it’s not something only a small handful will complain about, IN THEORY that might motivate them to take another look at the issue.

Again, I know there’s no practical way to do it, but it’d be nice.

Maybe, but one thing that would help would be the board taking responsibility. With the malware or self-playing ads it’s always “Not our fault.” and the sound-mixing censoring and the “Giraffe Incident” there is nary an acknowledgement of hypocracy but rather “It’s our board and we do what we want.”

MODERATOR INTERJECTION: stpauler, I assume this is meant to be a joke, but it’s still insulting and as such not permitted in this forum. (You not giving two shits is not the problem, but “random bitch” is.) I agree it’s border-line, but you know better, and please don’t do this again.

Who’s Felicia? I thought drewtwo was a dude.

Oh clearly I care, my heart is breaking and my liver is self harming at the thought of the gaping hole that has been left in this message board. This is an awful, awful day for this message board.

Well, then, why did you open a thread marked by drewtwo saying that he was going on an indefinite hiatus?

You cared, even if it was only enough to be able to try out that sick burn up thread.

::: MODERATOR BANGS GAVEL FOR ATTENTION ::: HEY! This is NOT the Pit. It’s not even MPSIMS. Such nasty comments are uncalled for and inappropriate here. drewtwo99 chose this forum to make comments about board and moderator performance, and several of you are making it personal. Enough. You want to discuss drewtwo99’s comments, go right ahead. You want to discuss how little you care about another human being’s feelings, that belongs elsewhere.

This is the second time I’ve called someone on the same issue. I don’t want to have to do it again.

I understand that these type of comments are often made when people announce their resignations in other forums – MPSIMS, Pit, wherever. I assume they’re acceptable there, I don’t moderator there. But this forum is About This Message Board, not about individuals (unless it’s rules-related discussion.)

Aiming for a kinder, gentler ATMB.

Damned autocorrect. Hugs. She meant hugs.

I totally understand your feelings drewtwo99. The board is in wane, and I don’t see that stopping. But, that’s the case with general message boards everywhere.

Oh great, now what am I going to do with all of these pugs?

Read my quips… No new attackses.

When you become so attached to a website that you take note of minor kerfluffles and allow them to impinge on your enjoyment of same… yeah, probably a good idea to take a break.

Gollum H. W. Smeagol?

It really has killed the magic, the respect, and the adoration I had for both the posters and the moderators/administrators.
[/QUOTE]

There’s the problem right there. It’s just a message board, with people typing into cyber-space. Neither the mods nor the posters merit adoration. We’re all just folks with opinions and keyboards.

Too heavy an expectation is bound to come a cropper at some point.

“Sound-mixing celebrity”?

Now you’ve done it. They should be knocking at your door soon.

Scroll back in ATMB to June and look for a locked thread posted by Ed Zotti with 0 replies. I’m not going to mention it directly because Ed Zotti has directed us to lay off the issue. There’s another thread by KarlGauss just above it that is also locked.

Removed because we’re not supposed to talk about it (thanks Trout and Irish men).

It is the first rule of sound mixing, after all.
