Personally, I think the reaction you got about the banner was unduely harsh.
But you’ve got to understand that you walked in to a situation where a much-respected real person died and was being mourned. You don’t criticize the flower arrangement at a funeral, even if you do have hay fever. I would hope that as a rational understanding person, you would figure this out and attempt to straighten things out.
But instead, here you are comparing yourself to civil and philosophical greats as if you’re standing up for some greater cause or something.
This post was a really bad idea. You should think really hard about this situation before you post again.

I’m not sure how old you are, but let me welcome you to maturity. Grow up, quit whining, post using some common sense and after a while, people might start to forget. If you run away and come back when you hope that people may have forgotten your gaffe, you’ll be known as the petulant child who couldn’t hack it. Especially since you announced that you were running away.
A lovely life lesson would be to stick around and wait this one out. But that’s just my humble opinion and I tend to enjoy the challenges in life.

Since the beautiful banner was put up, Edlyn and I have had to turn off images at home to visit SDMB, though our work computers handle it fine. We do love the banner, and are very glad that it’s here. We don’t know why our home computer has trouble with it (our system slows to a crawl, and the mouse-pointer becomes extremely sluggish and jerky).
Please hold your flames, as we do not advocate removing the wonderful banner. We recommend to the fellow having the problem that he do as we did.

You should have responded to Shayna, that would have been better than this. Well, maybe not better but it would have been entertaining. Remember she can’t reach through the monitor and get you.
So you stepped in it and got your ass kicked. I agree the reaction was way over the top. Your OP was fine if on shaky ground, but the follow up posts showed some poor judgement. It was just your bad luck to simulateously run into a touchy subject, a touchy person, and a couple of abusive assholes.
