I'm moving to Philadelphia

I’ll be going back to school this fall as a master’s student in the computer science department at the University of Pennsylvania. As it happened, it ended up working out well for me to move up sooner rather than later, so I’m taking a break from my last minute preparations and checks to finally post the thread I’ve been meaning to post for a while. I’ll be back with more details once I have internet access there, which may be a couple days. In the meantime, please keep your fingers crossed that I have a nice, boring move.

Yay! Welcome! May we do a Doper Dinner in your honor?

I already knew this - Congratulations! again - but I can’t be upset about the move since I think you’re now closer to us.

Phil-a-delphia Freedom!
I loooove, loooove, looooove you…yes I DO!
(Sorry…someone had to do it)

Have a nice, dull move. May all your china be unchipped.

May all your lampshades remain undented.

May you find the underwear and toilet paper immediately upon arrival.

And may there be a liquor store right around the corner.

Hey, your moving at a great time of year. Enjoy the area. Maybe I’ll see you “Down the shore!”

Sending boring thoughts your way!

Good luck!

Best of luck with the move!

Best of luck, ultrafilter!

I find the situation interesting; in 2005 I moved from Philadelphia to north Virginia; now you’re moving in the opposite direction. Who’s to say which city gets the better deal?

Just remember, it’s a great city to live in but there are hidden dangers.

The older parts of the city are infested with fairies. This is why there is so much ironwork. Try to carry an a piece of wrought iron on your person at all times. Remember never to be rude to the hidden folk, never watch them dance and NEVER eat or drink anything they offer you.

University city has an unusually high concentration of the restless dead. Walk in zig zags to keep them from following you (you may notice that many sidewalks are bricked in odd patterns to help confuse spirits).

And it’s not a real cheesesteak unless it’s on an Amoroso’s roll.

Excellent. You get to live with two of my favorite entertainment groups: The Dead Milkmen and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia!

Plus now you get to say/hear endless “All in all, I’d rather be in Philadelphia” jokes.

Other than that, all I know about Philadelphia is “Fuck the Phillies,” which I hear a lot from my friend who is a lifelong Braves fan. Being an American Leauger, I have little understanding of what that means. You should probably keep that sentiment to yourself, though.

That depends on the time of year and how the season is going. IANA sports fan, but I’ve observed that sports fandom in Philly seems less based on loving the home team than on hating all other teams.

Good Luck! We’ll be visiting Philly in July since my sister just relocated to Levittown recently. Her move was uneventful; here’s hoping yours is, too.

Thanks, ZipperJJ. Now I’m gonna walk around for the rest of the evening hearing ‘Punk Rock Girl’ playing in my head.

Philadelphia fans are known to be very fiercely loyal to their teams…
except when their teams are sucking, which they seem to do often, so one in Philly is likely to hear that sentiment from everybody and anybody in town.

Welcome! Congratulations! Good luck with the move and your studies!

Usually Penn students are moving out, not in, at this time of year (commencement was today, in fact). If you get here soon enough you’ll find some good trashpicking, if you’re into that, or if (God forbid) the move wasn’t boring and you need to replace something.

Best of luck for a nice uneventful move, so uneventful it’ll make the Pennsylvania Cable Network look riveting.

Moving was pretty uneventful, and I’m slowly but surely getting unpacked. Thanks for the good thoughts and all.

Sure, I’d be up for something in the next couple weeks.

I think I’m actually a little further away, but the drive time’s about the same since I no longer have to brave the beltway.

I ain’t afraid of no ghosts.

I’d have been just as happy to move up a bit later, but this is how it ended up working out. I was a little nervous about trying to find parking with commencement going on, but it turned out not to be an issue.

36th and Lancaster. Good Thai food @ Lemon Grass. Go treat yourself.

If you want good Italian food, check with me first and I’ll get you some special treatment at a nice place. You can’t refuse this offer? Capish?

Tony Luke’s chicken parmesan sandwiches. Worth the drive - and I’m in the DC area!

Man, not even enough notice for a farewell pint at Jimmy’s! :stuck_out_tongue:

I went to college near Philly, and have some good memories of that town. Good luck up there!

These are nothing compared to the hidden dangers of getting a cheesesteak not made in Philadelphia.

UC has a pretty high concentration of restaurants and bars, but many people prefer to shop in adjacent Center City.

Oh yeah, UC looks pretty nice, but it’s still in West Philadelphia. Always stay alert.

So why did you decide to do graduate work in computer science instead of in math? When I talked to you about this several years ago you were more interested in math. Furthermore, you probably produce the best answers on the SDMB for questions about math.
