Seriously, some of it comes from emulating Cecil, patron saint of Curmudgeons.
Personally, I like it. You can get good answers or debate from smart people AND some smartass humor. And inside jokes and references are what make it a community.
If you just want a serious answer, try to blip over the smartass and dumbass replies and interact with the people who are actually trying to be helpful.

That thread is an excellent example of what the SDMB is all about. Truly funny smartass posts mixed with truly informative serious posts including cites. Someone even linked to a relevant article by Cecil Himself! It doesn’t get any better than that.
If you don’t like what happened in that thread, erictelevision, you won’t enjoy your time at the SDMB.

Personally I find the wiseass answers to be the best.
I’m not sure why you objected to OT answers. Part of the question involved how much of the Old Testament was found there.
(And if you will note, among the eight “valid” answers was quite a bit of information.)
