"I'm not a big fan of _______, but I love __________"

Movies, music, food, home goods, ethnic group , take your pick…

Mine:

I’m not a big fan of heavy metal, but I love Rory Gallagher.

Granted, Rory’s as much if not more a blues player than HM, but there’s lots of elements and influence there.

I’m not a big fan of polygamy, but I love the show “Sister Wives.”

I think the husband’s a putz but I really like his wives.

I’m not a big fan of show music, but I love pre-WW2 pop music.

This is more an issue of audience than anything else. If you know the latter, it’s usually by way of the former, whereas I came to it thru jazz.

Science fiction / William Gibson.

Or speculative fiction if you prefer, or whatever it’s called these days.

Fantasy. Terry Pratchett.

I know it viewed as more satire than actual “Fantasy”, but trying to describe a book with Trolls, Dwarves, Vampires, Werewolves Witches, Wizards and an anthropomorphic personification of Death who is partial to kittens always makes my friends eyes cross.

I’m not a big fan (or a fan at all) of country music, but I love the new show Nashville.

Don’t like country music, but I LOOOOOVE Junior Brown!

I’m not a fan or even casual admirer of anything Joyce wrote before, say, 1923, but I think Finnegans Wake is one of the very few exceptional long-form prose works written and published in the 20th Century. Certainly the only thing worth rereading by JJ.

I don’t care for country music, but I love Taylor Swift.

I’m not a fan of Cyndi Lauper but I love “All Through the Night.”

Ben Affleck / Argo

I’m not a big fan of Joss Whedon, but I love The Avengers.

It’s arguable if that is truly representative of his work, I suppose.

Same. She is so cute and talented.

I’m not a big fan of sports type movies, but I love The Fighter.

I’m not a fan of country music, but I love Lyle Lovett (it’s debatable if he’s still doing country, but I like his early stuff, too).

I’m really not trying to threadshit here, but as a Rory Gallagher fan, I think you need to adjust your definition of Heavy Metal

I kinda despise Tom Cruise, but thought he was tolerable in Vanilla Sky (and Austin Powers).

Bleary eyed OLD Huey Lewis and the News and his execrable pop songs aimed at the frat boy crowd. He creeps me out and I think his songs stink. But I do love “Heart and Soul” (?) and the video, sheer 80’s nostalgia.

Ska-punk - Authority Zero.
Nu-Metal - In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth 3 by Coheed and Cambria (their other albums aren’t really nu metal.)

Was never a big fan of “Springsteen”, but later after most of the hysteria about “Born In The USA” died down, I got into his softer stuff from “The River” and “Nebraska”.

Still overrated, in my opinion, but I do understand why people dig him.

It’s too bad he can’t ditch that stupid looking hat.

Any guy who can play two guitars like that while also singing lead can wear a tutu for all I care.
