Name an artist/work you love from a genre you hate

I have a strong dislike for country music. Always have. It’s boring, derivative, uninnovative, and if you’ve heard one twangy guitar while some guy with a drawl sings about Georgia, then you’ve heard them ALL.

I also dislike teen pop. Always have, even when I was a teen. NKOTB? Backstreet Boys? Britney Spears? Justin Bieber? GAG ME. Spoiled little brats singing songs about true love and fairy tale romance when they’re not even old enough to go on dates without a chaperone.

That being said, I absolutely LOVE Taylor Swift. Given my tastes, there’s no objective reason why I should, especially considering that the rest of my musical tastes tend towards hard rock and heavy metal. Nonetheless, I started hearing her songs on the radio a few years ago and went out and bought “Fearless” because of it. I’ve since bought all of her albums (even her Christmas album!) and bought seventh-row tickets to see her live, where I must have been the only adult heterosexual male who wasn’t there chaperoning his 12-year-old daughter.

Anyone else out there who’s in the situation of loving something from a style they hate?

I generally dislike country music, but Lyle Lovett is one of my favorites in any genre.

Don’t like Country, but I make exceptions for a good ‘story telling’ country song like The Devil Went Down to Georgia or The Gambler.

Puns are to comedy as Sloth is to Victoria Secret models, but The Beetlejuice cartoon managed to be clever and fresh.

Though that was 20 years ago…

As a rule, I am not at all a Sci-Fi fan, but “12 Monkeys” is one of the 10 best movies I have ever seen. (It’s also the only movie with Brad Pitt I have ever seen, except for “Thelma & Louise”. I think Pitt does an excellent job with his role, even though he seems to be a Grade A douchebag in his personal life.)

I also avoid Horror movies at all costs, but I think “An American Werewolf In London” was brilliant, although in full disclosure it is actually a mix of horror and comedy, and not just another run-of-the-mill scary movie.

I generally don’t like Country music but when I heard Paul Brandt’s “My Heart Has A History” for the first time I swooned.

I mostly hate, hate, hate TV sitcoms.

But I love several examples of the sub-genre, animated TV sitcoms: The Simpsons, Futurama, South Park.

I also love The Office, mainly the UK version, but also I like the U.S. one, and Extras was terrific.

Assuming it counts as a sitcom, I love Slings and Arrows most of all.

Not to jump on the country music hater/ but… bandwagon

But… Hickman-Dalton Gang

Absolutely all day long and all night over again…

I’m not a big fan of country music and I absolutely cannot stand Bluegrass music. But I like a couple songs by The Old Crow Medicine Show and I absolutely love everything I’ve heard by Mumford and Sons (which I’ve heard described as country/bluegrass/alternative).

I despise American Idol.

But, I like Kelly Clarkson’s voice.

To my ears, she is fourth in line after Linda Ronstadt, Ann Wilson and Belinda Carlisle.

One name: Coolio.

Despise Bluegrass. Hate it with a white hot intensity. Loved O’ Brother Where Art Thou and own the soundtrack.

I’ve learned not to be surprised that I can come to like something I thought I hated if I learn enough about it. I used to dislike all country music, klezmer music and bluegrass. Boy, have I changed. Patsy Cline is a god. I can hear gypsy music and swing in klezmer and bluegrass has become a passion.

Still can’t find much I like about opera except the vocal athleticism of its stars.

I utterly despise almost all children’s animation primarily produced to sell pink toys to young girls, but I love MLP:FiM.

Eminem

Echoing several posters in the thread already, I despise Country music… but Johnny Cash was the man, and I can listen to anything by him.

Is figure skating considered a sport? I’m bored to tears by sports, but a few years ago I was utterly mesmerized every weekend by figure skating.

Me too . . . ever since Tonya Harding tried to take out Nancy Kerrigan . . . and then broke her lace.

Hate video games, love the Wii skiing games.

Other than that, there aren’t a lot of genres I don’t like. Don’t care much for American football, love watching the high school football state championships.

I love video games, but I hate MMOs. Still spent several years playing World of Warcraft. Same thing with RTS and Starcraft. Blizzard has an uncanny knack for making games I love in genres I hate.
