I don’t like the look of the new ship, this is only 10 years before Kirk took the helm of the Enterprise from what I’ve read and the ship looks wrong to me. Non-graceful and a little off from how the ships of the Federation should look.
The first episode is scheduled to be broadcast in May, then the series will be only available on CBS no-access or some scheme like that, that will fail to build an audience.
I think it’s kind of cool, actually. It’s reminiscent of old concept art for the original Star Trek series. What’s giving me pause is that it’s another prequel show. Enterprise was constricted by trying to build its own stories while respecting the canon and it never really pulled it off.
My days as a Trekkie are long ago, but I recall the Constitution-class starships as being something completely new and powerful and expanding the Federation’s abilities. Not surprising that a ship ten years earlier would seem “old” in the model of Archer’s Enterprise.
Seems to me that the problem was Berman & Braga really had no clue what to do with the Temporal Cold War. Should’ve scrapped that whole arc and brought in the Xindi much earlier.
For me I’m being cautiously optimistic. I would have liked Bryan Fuller to stay and I hate that I have to get a streaming service to watch it but I really really want Trek back on TV…
USS Enterrpise was actually around some 15 (?) years before Discovery is launched. UNLESS…it too is a ship with some history before we see it, like Kirk’s ship was.
The ship design isn’t really something I worry about at all. I am likewise more concerned they’ll repeat the mistakes of Enterprise. I’m also concerned it won’t feel optimistic.
I’m fine with them fixing the sexism and other bigotry, and even some of the retro-future tech, though the iconic stuff needs to stay. Make the computer sound better, but keep those silly looking chips and the huge computers.
I also have no intention of buying into a network in order to watch. I do not think this is a good way to get people on board. Star Trek is not the sure winner it used to be back when they did the same thing with Voyager on the UPN network.
This. I think the ship looks fine and it looks like something that would exist in the TOS era – though with the lighted sensor dish as opposed to a radar-looking one and the light up engines and all, it seems more in line with 10 years or so after TOS. I’m kind of surprised that they want to go with 10 years before TOS when I think there is more interesting ground to be covered around the time between The Motion Picture and before TNG. In that era, you have better looking ships (going from doing it on the cheap with low tech on TV to ILM-quality effects) while still having a time of two fisted diplomacy.
It is not canonical, but the launch date of 2245 is accepted by many fans. This would be 20 years before Kirk took command for the five-year mission.
My objection to the design is that it matches nothing in the canonical designs found in Enterprise or Star Trek (the original series). I hate it when people insist upon putting their own spin on something already established.
I thought that my Trekkie days were long gone, but listening to the music in the promo it sounds Klingon-y also. The ship looks like a cross between a federation ship and a Klingon design, maybe a D7 from TOS.
