I'm okay with celery

I mean, it’s usually just… there for me. It’s non offensive, and although it doesn’t really add flavor, the texture it can give can be pretty nice (e.g. pot pie filling). I won’t go out of my way to eat it, unless it’s a vehicle for something more tasty, but I don’t despise it either.

Anyone else lukewarm about celery?

Right here. I don’t live for it, but I won’t pick it out of dishes nor refuse to eat it. I guess you could describe my feelings for celery as indifferent.

Another celery-ambivalent here. I buy it now and then, especially if I have soups or stews or stir fries in my upcoming meal plans. I like how long it lasts in the fridge.

BUT: I did grow some over the winter, as in, I planted it in October and ignored it until this week. I’ve chopped a few stalks off, and am VERY surprised by the strong flavour in both the stems and leaves. I sauteed some with bacon and green onions as a side dish, and found it, um, much louder than expected.

Maybe I’ll make some more celery-forward dishes. Cream-of- soup, for ex. Um… that’s about all the ideas I have. Hmm.

To the extent that I even think about celery, which is not much at all, it’s always in the context of crudite. It was a staple of the vegetable platter my mother would put out when we had guests and munching on celery and carrot sticks is a memory that is very much ingrained. To this day I know I can always count on good 'ol celery to provide something to do / eat whilst at a party. That being said, I never buy it or cook with it.

Finally, a celery thread I can get excited about! That celery plant has its uses. And sometimes stores sell it cheap. You can dice it up tiny for tuna salad to add interesting texture – I may have done that last year.

I like the flavor. If it’s sliced thin, the texture is fine for soups and stews. But I prefer water chestnuts for that crunchy texture instead, though they lack the flavor celery has.

Thank you for this thread.

I’m picturing a newcomer to the dope, perusing the CS forum, thinking “What is with the celery fixation here?”

I like celery just fine, but I don’t think anybody actually gets excited about celery. But it’s certainly not there just for texture. I most often use it for flavor in stuff like soups and mirepoix where it gets cooked down to a point where it’s texture is meaningless.

Oh, and braised celery. That’s very good if you have too much celery that you don’t know what to do with. Honestly, I’m more meh about it raw. 95% of the time I’m using celery, it’s cooked.

I actually super-love celery and I didn’t visit the Hate Celery thread cuz it would make me sad.

It definitely has a smell and a flavor to me! If I cut some up my hands smell of it. I LOVE LOVE LOVE it in tuna salad and don’t even bother to make it anymore if I don’t have celery on hand. I also love it with peanut butter or cream cheese. Or just in dip!

Not too often alone but if there’s no dip around, I can munch on plain celery.

It’s good stuff!

Not a big celery fan. But, a friend made a potato salad with celery in it.

It was marvelous!

You need to start your own thread for celery lovers! This thread is strictly for those who are nonchalant about celery!!

I like the tender, inner celery stalks quite well. But think the fibrous, outer stalks are kinda nasty. So, it averages out for me, just with more swingy drama.

Iceberg lettuce also doesn’t bother me. I guess I’m just edgy that way.

You can peel celery with a vegetable peeler to get rid of the tough strings. After you toss the tough strings keep peeling to make a great salad topper.

I like to dice it with onion add mayo, tuna, and shell pasta with salt and pepper. Tastes like childhood.

The I love celery thread is over here!

I’m glad I’ve finally started a thread worthy of 2 spinoffs!

Celery is a necessity in chicken or tuna salad, and adds a distinctive taste to soups. I also use celery seed quite often in cooking or salads.

Troublemaker!

Dennis

I’m not sure which celery thread you belong in. You’re somewhat of a celery misfit

I just started the conversation that needed to be started. Less “troublemaker” more “visionary”.

Celery is alright. Like panache45 said, celery seed is alright, too, but man it’s easy to accidentally use too much. Celery salt, another alright celery incarnation is especially alright on hot dogs.

2 good things about celery, you can chop it with great celerity, the knife clattering on the cutting board drawing admiring glances from your friends and family. And it begs to be smeared with peanut butter. This has something to do with sex.
