I'm on the phone and surfing the boards ignoring the conversation

Is this normal?

I can’t recall any part of the conversation of the person on the other end.

Am I a bad person?

If you are a bad person, so am I. Been there, done that.

Only if you get caught by the person you’re on the phone with. This usually happens when you’re making “uh-huh, yes, I see, absolutely” noises and then

a- you suddenly realize the phone person said “so you think I oughta kill myself?”

b- you say “uh-huh, oh yes, Madge, I think you’re totally right, you flippin’ MORON, that belongs in the Pit and that is NOT how you spell ‘chiropractic’!”

You should be spanked.

and then the oral sex!

I was doing this the other day while giving an address to someone. I was reading some pit thread or other and very nearly gave the address as “17 Homosexual Street”. Instead it was “17 Homo… er, Housemartin Street”. Heh.

I used to play Loderunner while talking on the phone with a friend of mine. It was always the same thing, day in day out: her math teacher hates her for no reason, the boy that she likes said two words to her so she’s on cloud nine / the boy that she likes totally ignored her today and she’s soooo depressed, her mom expects her to do all the housework and never makes her brothers do any, etc.

I always felt a little guilty about it, but if I tried to focus all my attention on the conversation, I would get so bored that I would sometimes find myself being rude. “Look, K----, based on what you told me, he probably doesn’t like you all that much. Why the hell are you so hung up on him! Move on, will ya!?” And all she really seemed to need from me was, “Uh huh . . . Really? . . . Hmmm . . . Yeah? . . . You’re kidding . . .”

A few years later, she wrote me a letter telling me how grateful she was that I had been her friend, and how I was the only one she could really talk to, because I was such a great listener, and I probably kept her from committing suicide her senior year.

I remember nothing about her contemplating suicide, so either she was being a touch overdramatic . . . or I wasn’t paying attention. (I suspect the former.)

Now I watch the TV with closed captioning on while I talk to my mother-in-law on the phone. Closed captioning is truly a wonderful thing.

Mr. Ujest, is dat you?
