I’ve been on the SDMB since AOL days and this is the first time I’ve ever pitted a Straight Dope member.
TimothyNewsome, come on down. You just insulted me, misgendered me, and dismissed me from conversation in one pithy pissy little driveby sentence:
a) I’m genderqueer, which is either cousin to transgender or a subset of it depending on how you define your terms. I don’t choose to use the word transgender but that’s my business. I was beaten up and driven to a suicide attempt for being a fairy sissy femme, so don’t pull this shit about ‘male’ and ‘heterosexual’. I’m fucking marginalized and qualified to speak on gender.
b) You came into that thread to make the above as your sole contribution to the discussion? Seriously?
c) I don’t have much tolerance for the attitude that “we shouldn’t bother listening to people who aren’t at least as oppressed as we are” anyway. Yeah, let’s all whip out our oppression-meters and measure who’s had it the worst. Reverse fucking elitism. Because all the world’s problems were designed by cis white male able-bodied English-speaking rich Americans. They plotted it all in the boy’s bathroom. And if we can identify your membership in a handful of oppressor-groups we can ad hominem your ass and not listen to your viewpoint. Lookie here, I got Genuwine Oppressed Group Membership cards, so I get to talk and you don’t, etc.
Yeah, so in this case I actually do. It’s still a bullshit argument for you to make.
Privileged people often really do have difficulty understanding the realities of the social system they participate in; there are legitimate reasons to consider the marginalized to be more authoritative and give added weight to what they have to say. I really am a white person, and when I talk about race it really is true that I oughta try to remain aware of how my white priv can make me oblivious to things, and that might be the case in the above-mentioned thread. But there’s a fundamental goddam difference between “we get to take the fact of your observable privilege into account” and “you don’t get to speak, your viewpoint doesn’t count”.
Among other things, you don’t ever know what marginalized group a person belongs to. Might be a group that hasn’t been socially highlighted for the ways in which they’re marginalized. So you should always assume that anyone you’re dealing with belongs to at least one. Just like everyone probably belongs to at least one category of privilege.
Now get the fuck out of my sight.
