My house smells like homemade bread and venison stew… mmm, mmm, good!
And lunch was noodle soup with frozen vegees from my garden this summer.
Now, if I could just get a steady, full time job I might have a good 2009…

How’d the airport security thing work out?
Glad to hear you’re doing good.
It would be so nice to come to your place for dinner! The meal sounds heavenly.
Ha, when I came back in the house today, the umm…aroma practically hit me in the face. For a moment, I was wondering why. Then I remembered cooking garlic, sardines, chicken, onions, venison, chiles, olive oil, among other things, over the last couple days. And with the windows closed for the winter, the air can get thick at times.
Yeah, people say that they can’t afford to eat healthily, but most folks don’t realize what you can do with a truly low food budget. You can do some wonderful things for darned near free.
Hear, hear. Even the Boxcar Children ate well.
Get yourself a Crock Pot, find some tasty recipes that use cheap staples like beans and rice, and you’re set.
I used to want to hang with 3acresandatruck. Now I want to come by for dinner.
I made chicken and dumplings from scratch last night - started with a whole chicken, everything else is pantry staples or left over from Thanksgiving prep, so it cost me about 5 bucks for something like 8 servings. I wasn’t even trying to economize - could have done way better if I set my mind to it.
I’ll stick with double-stuffed cheese burritos from Taco Bell for $0.99. It’s a whole pound! Woo
After all that fuss and bother? Never got a phone call. Apparently they didn’t need to hire as many people as they thought they did and right now they aren’t hiring any. It seems air travel is down and folks aren’t turning over in the job like they used to - in other words, the economy. Also, I’m assuming they don’t want to hire a mass of new people when no one knows what the new administration is going to do with the agency.
My app is good through next August, though, and other TSA types I’ve talked to said they waited 6 months or a year, so I certainly haven’t given up hope. They do warn you that it can be a long time before you’re called so it hasn’t been entirely unexpected.
Well, wouldn’t say free - there’s a cost in time and effort - but yes, you can eat very well for very little money.
And many thanks to my friend who got his deer this fall and generously gave me 5 lbs of venison. Butchering a deer is a big, nasty, bloody job and it was worth more than the loaf of homemade bread and the bag of from-scratch cinnamon rolls I gave in exchange.
