Im posting from my palm pilot

Mangetout, how well does that little Treo keyboard work for you?

I’ve browsed the straight dope on my tungsten W (with built-in cellular internet.) Haven’t tried posting from it, mostly because I couldn’t be bothered to see if logging in would work. It was more of a ‘Can’t wait to get home to see if someone has replied on XXX thread yet’ thing. :]

It’s OK, quite usable for pecking out the odd word or short SMS message, but for any text entry longer than a few dozen characters, I use grafitti (which I find really quick and can do without thinking).

I had a bit of a job getting Grafitti to work though, because the device isn’t designed to use it at all (there’s no silkscreen area).
First, I had to install a freeware app called GrafittiAnywhere - this got it working, but then I discovered that the device firmware includes Grafitti 2, which I didn’t like at all, partly because I was already familiar with Grafitti 1 from my Sony Clié, but mostly because Grafitti 2 has (IMO) far too many two-stroke characters. So I installed the original version (procedure detailed here) now it works fine.

I’m posting from my new Treo 650 right now. At first, the buttons are kind of awkward to get control of. After a while, you kinda get used to it. Aside from the weblayout sometimes, the only major gripe that I have is that sometimes I double click the buttons which is annoying. Using the palm is a good secondary source for internet access and Doping, but IMHO, it shouldn’t be used as a replacement.

I have a Treo 650 also, it’s fantastic. If you do a lot of typing on it, you have to get KeyCaps600 (don’t have the link, sorry). Instead of using the Shift key to type characters or the Caps key to capitalize, you set it for how long you hold the button down and it will cycle through each option. Makes typing soo easy.

I don’t find the keyboard to be too small, I usually type with my nails though so it might be harder if you have larger fingers. I don’t know Graffiti anyway, so I make do.
I don’t use the internet very much anyway, I don’t have an unlimited usage plan. But I do have a program called iPedia that is an online encyclopedia. You type in your keywords and it will go and download the information to the device. Then you can read it and it discards it after a new search is performed. The only thing I dislike about it is that mine freezes occasionally, when I try to perform too many things at once or in quick succession. I have to hard reset it to ‘wake it up’ again.
Also I’d like to be able to hotsync ringtones, instead of emailing them or downloading them from the internet.

I could post from my PDA too, but it would probably cost me in internet charges :frowning:

But damn if it isn’t cool to play with.

I browse the Boards using my BlackBerry, but I’ve never posted from it.

I’m remotely accessing my desktop at home via my Ipaq/logmein.com, and posting this message

I jujst installed wireless at home, but alas, I don’t have a wireless Palm. I guess my laptop will have to do for now.

Stop rubbing it in, guys. I got a really cool brand new PDA for graduation. And now I’m waiting for it’s replacement in the mail because the internet doesn’t work correctly. There’s something wrong with the wireless card.

Dumb question here: if you’ve got a Palm with wi-fi, do you have to pay for access? or can you just use whatever wireless you happen to have around. We’ve got a wireless router at home, so a potential new Palm (I have a tungsten E which is starting to misbehave) with wi-fi might be useful. I’m definitely not in the market for one where I’d have to pay for access, e.g. for a cellular version.

Oh yeah - I know Bluetooth is a separate technology. Do Bluetooth-enabled devices usually have wi-fi as well? or do you have to look for something that specifically says “wi-fi”?

Did your listing end today? I tried bidding on a similar ipaq this morning as an impulse purchase, I didn’t win though.

Slight hijack to everyone - would you recommened your pocket pc/palm/mobile computing device/phone? Similar to Mama Zappa’s question.

wireless, in a sense. I’m on my laptop, which has a linksys wireless card.

I am posting on my Dell Axim X50. I very rarely use the 2 desktops in the house anymore.

I can’t get the dope with avantgo for some reason. I’ve changed heaps of settings, but it never works when I click on a thread (I tried it with the MB homepage and then just with IMHO). Any hints? How did you get it to work? I have the same problem with Fark. Grrr.

Those are photons, not electrons.
