I'm pretty sure my cat isn't neutered like they told me

He has testicles.
He frots everything in sight.
He fights with other cats.
His wee smells.

He has the tattoo in his ear, but what the hell?
I don’t think he’s neutered.

What do they remove when they neuter a cat?
Did they just do him too late?

Anyone else got a so callled neutered male that does this?

If your cat has testicles, he is not neutered. That is all there is to it. Hie him to a vet immediately. It’s a fairly inexpensive procedure.

All the neutered males I’ve seen have add their nets removed. My guess is that someone goofed.

They can neuter cats without removing the scrotum. The vet makes an incision and cuts or removes the requisite plumbing through it.

“Under a general anaesthetic, male cats have the fur “plucked” from their scrotum. Two small incisions are made in the skin of the scrotum and the cat is castrated, i.e. has both testicles removed.”

The testes are indeed removed during castration of a male cat. There are situations where a feral cat is vasectomized in order for him to continue breeding yet not impregnating other ferals (a territoriality thing). If there is any doubt, prolapse his penis and check for the presence of barbs which disappear once testosterone is no longer circulating. Better yet, see your veterinarian.

It’s not the usual method, IME. It’s inexpensive enough to have the testicles removed and ensure his sterility, though.

Some cats still look like they have testicles in their scrotum even though they don’t. Some cats can have very strong urine even though they are neutered, however if it is the distinctive tom cat urine odor then it is possible he was only very recently neutered and it hasn’t gone away yet or he is indeed unneutered.

If you got him from a shelter it’s possible that someone just goofed and didn’t actually neuter him but gave him the tatoo. Another possibility is he had undescended testicle(s) and it either descended afterwards or is working while inside him.

I had a cat with one undescended testicle, we took the one in the sac out by the usual means and then searched for the other in his abdomen. The vet found something that looked like a testicle but I didn’t bother to check the cytology to be sure. After a while he continued to develop tom cat traits, he fought with other cats, got the big jowls, sprayed and had strong tom cat urine. I had a blood test for testosterone done and he had as much as a two-balled cat. So we went hunting again, found the hidden testicle and reneutered him. That time I made sure to check the cytology and save the testicle in formalin to send off for pathology if I needed confirmation. However, he quickly became mellow and unsmelly so I knew we had gotten the testicle.

Undescended testicles can become tumorous so it really is a good idea to take you cat to a vet and have them check him over. If it’s been a while since he was supposedly neutered and they find no testicles in his scrotum and you are still seeing tom cat traits you might want to get a testosterone test to check for an undescended testicle.

OR, if you don’t feel like messing with his little kitty weiner, just poke at his little scrotum. If there is something in the little fuzzy bags, he’s not neutered.

My cats privates looked normal. Never poked 'em, though.

You better believe I’m gonna take kitty to a vet after reading a sentence like that.

Not 100% true. Some male cats have teticles that do not descend into the scrotum. They remain abdominal or inguinal and continue to produce testosterone.

That’s why I said if there is something there he is not neutered. If they are empty it’s still questionable.

you are right. sorry!

If the cat has either visible testes, (in a short hair usually visible as the cat walks away from you) or you are able to manipulate his scrotum and feel them, he’s not neutered. Unless, as some dog owners do, he has had prosthetic testicles inserted!

My big male has absolutely no visible scrotum.

Undescended testes frequently turn cancerous. I have had to neuter a couple of promising dogs who only dropped one testicle, as it is a genetically passed trait, endangering the health of the dog, and disqualifying him from the show ring.

As for the spraying, there are products available which contain enzymes which truly do eliminate the odor of urine, feces, vomit, and the other not-so-lovely odors and stains which come along with owning a pet. They are readily available at any pet supply store, as well as in most ___-mart’s in the pet department. They are a life saver for anyone with a sprayer/marker!

If you obtained your cat through a shelter, and he is not neutered, the shelter or the vet who performed the surgery/ear tattoo should pick up the bill for the second go round. Vets are people, and sometimes make mistakes; I had a puppy in for retained puppy teeth, and my vet missed one! He pulled the last one gratis.

As a side note, the sooner you have him neutered, the less you will have to deal with his spraying.

What does that mean, ‘prolapse his penis’? I’ve never even seen a penis on any of our four neutered males. Our shorthaired tabby loves to lie on his back and spread his rear paws to the sides… but even then you can’t see a thing! I’ve always wondered that about cats…where’s the willy? Is there like a fold of skin which hides it when it’s not being used?

To the OP: Sometimes, neuterings are incorrectly or incompletely carried out. We have one cat who was neutered at around six months oa, but he continued make his territorial markings and his urine smelled powerfully. Turned out that the vet had completely missed one testicle which had never descended.

If you look below the scrotum there’s a hole, that’s where the penis hides. Pressing on both sides of the hole might get the penis to pop out and say “hi”. It’s really difficult to coax the little fellow out in neutered overweight cats. Sometimes you just have to have the right touch.

I knew there was something. I read somewhere that the penes of all male felines are hidden when not in use, but I didn’t know the details.

Pardon, I meant to say felids.

I probably don’t even want to know, but what did the vet remove the first time that looked like a testicle but really wasn’t?

When our cat was neutered, I went to pick him up to the vet, and pointed out to them that he still had his little kitty package, as it were. They explained that the procedure they use simply snips the plumbing as well as the blood vessels that supply the testicles. After a few months, the cat’s body “reabsorbs” the tissue of the testicles. I was skeptical of this whole thing, but sure enough, time went by and his testicles shrank and now he has a smaller scrotum. The cat would be so mortified if he knew I was describing his privates to strangers on the internet. Anyway, at first glance, it’s hard to tell if he is neutered or merely has smaller than average equipment.

For the cat in the OP though, I’m thinking there’s still some testicles in there somewhere. Some cats continue to have stinky wee and aggression after neutering, but the whole package (hee) as described makes me think a vet should check out the situation.
