I'm sending out a newsletter. How do I avoid the "spam" bin?

When sending out a newsletter, I know that there are certain things which flag messages to be sent into the Spam folder…
As far as I’m aware, the names of the pictures need to correspond with the content on the newsletter itself.

Also, having an “unsubscribe” option helps.

What other things should I watch out for in order to avoid the Spam bin when sending out my newsletter?

The very best thing would be to have your subscribers whitelist the address you’ll be mailing it from. You should notify them to do so on the subscription page, and maybe include a link to a page with instructions for how to go about it for common email clients and services.

Find a free spam program, many of them will have scores of various features. You can reverse-engineer to avoid those.

High image to word content is bad.
Free Dollar Mortgage and words like that (and of course obscenities) set off triggers.

Unsubscribe actually does not usually improve, in fact it often brings your rating down.

Generally, see what newsletters from professional trusted companies send out, and copy that.

I don’t have a cite, but I’d agree with that based on my experience. (I’ve sent out several thousands of political emails in the past week.)

And it makes sense: almost every spam email I get has an alleged unsubscribe link. ‘Alleged’ because either it’s a fake, or actually using it gets your email tagged as ‘live’ and thus you get even more spam.

And very few emails I get from friends have an ‘unsubscribe’ link. So obviously, the presence of an ‘unsubscribe’ link marks it as a mass email sent to lots of people. So an increased possibility that it’s spam.
