My roomate moved out and won’t associate with me anymore.
My fiance is in DC and I am in champaign-urbana.
I can’t seem to make friends here.
Everyone on my floor suspects everyone else of doing something gross in the bathroom, and therefore gives everyone the evil eye.
I never have anyone to eat lunch or dinner with. I hate eating alone.
The only way to meet people here is to get drunk, and I don’t drink.
I have so much homework I wouldn’t be able to go anywhere, anyway.
Speaking of homework, I should be writing a paper now.
I’ll go now.

But I have so much work, I don’t know if I can BE on the boards much! I have, alltogether, 20+ pages of papers to write, plus reading, plus studying. 
I’m only a freshman! I’m not used to this!!!

Well if you’re studying sociology or even some aspects of psych you could do a paper on the social dynamics of net interaction and get each of us to write our own perspectives and then you can just do a bit of linkage and voila!!!

Hon, not only did I SEE him, but I saw him in my own small town! And I know people who KNOW him personally, so I got to meet him. I live in a college town, so I am sure that had something to do with him coming here. But I also think that the fact that he knew people here was a factor.
As has been well established on other threads, I do not do “BIG CITY” well. So it was so wonderful to be able to see someone I really like without driving to Seattle or Vancouver. Not that I don’t like those cities, but I always have to weigh how much I want to see a concert against how much I don’t really want to go to the BIG CITY!
I know, I know. I am just a country mouse.

Not to worry, Relic, life in Shampoo-Banana is life just about life anywhere else. It isn’t a race, and it sure isn’t a drink-off. Of course I’m a nerd from way back, but here’s truth: alone can be strength and comfort.
Betcha the frantically popular folk are a million times less confident and happy than they seem. Dining (even on dorm chow) by yourself with a “comfort” book is centered and impressive. Don’t let surfaces fool you: take the experience at your own pace.
And listen to Scotti; this place oozes bright, opinionated folks who think you are just damned fine exactly as you are. You have all the time in the world and a buncha sideways, pissant Doper friends at your back.

relic, I understand. Freshman year can blow hardcore. It does get better! And meanwhile you have papers and us. (Don’t worry about the papers too much, either you will ace them with minimal effort or you will growl at the people who do. Use commas correctly, spell check, and you’ll be golden. Oh and don’t forget to cite. Most profs are used to freshies with no skills.)
Go write your papers, we love you and will patiently await your return. (Meanwhile I think I have a Latin exam calling me… sort of…eventually.)
