I'm starting a new political party

We have lots of interesting political parties up here, my favourite being the ‘Work Less Party’. We do not, however, beckon. Sorry.

Okay, sure, but what exactly would we be debating?

Umm…I’m going to go out on a limb here, but maybe, just maybe, for starters, the pros and cons of your proposed new Party as well as the viability of same along with any number of further nuances and/or major points of discord? Or do you think it feasible to start a political Party in all of one [del]Stone Tablet[/del] OP?

Besides, the tide rolls roughly 33% less turds ashore in GD thus the signal to noise ratio might improve by more or less the same percentage.

YMMV of course.

Until conservatives overturn the tables of the money changers and give away all material wealth, I’d say that cuts both ways.

Wow, I hope this, what appears to me, trend of people getting upset over unoffensive posts goes away soon. In my thread on the 10th amendment one of the posters seemed to have a hint of hostility towards me, which only bugged me a little, but in this thread BugMeNot2 really annoys me, and it is not even my thread.

But getting back to the Malleus’s OP, I like it, but I’m curious if you have a platform for the new party? I don’t think a single party of people making judgments solely on their best judgment would work, because somehow, somewhere down the line, people would begin to align themselves with like-minded people and two or more parties would emerge from the single party you outlined in the OP.

Of course if the two or three or however many parties would adhere to the principles you outlined in the OP I think the country would be better off.

I haven’t quite figured it out yet. Maybe SANE can be divided into a Rightie chapter and a Leftie chapter, with the Centrists rotating between them so they don’t go extremist.
Or maybe just a network of parties who are committed to rational debate. Normally if you tried this you’d end up with everybody screaming at each other and leaving the club- but since the whole point of the SANE Party is to be cool collected and respectful of the other guy, it might just possibly work.

Since there seems to be some confusion here, my OP was tongue-in-cheek. I mean, I’d love to have a party like that, but not very many pols would be willing to join. Also, I think the US government might have a problem with thieves getting their hands cut off.

Yeah, that would be going too far. It’s just best to stick to waterboarding.

Let’s say God is real. And when you die, you face him.

Most liberals would be like “who are you to judge me?”

That question pretty much sums up liberal moral equivalency in one neat package.

Well, it might, if it had any basis in reality. Are you just spouting random bullshit?

Wow, has Bugmenot2 only been here for a couple of days? Amazing.

Are we allowed to wager anymore on how long someone will be among us? If so, what is the appropriate forum?

You know what’s a curious thought: do some research on countries where religion runs rampant and find out their violence statistics. Now, go look at countries which are atheistic and see how those statistics bear out.

And, um, leave your dogma at door before someone here hands your ass to you. If you want to make an argument, do it. But spouting mindless drivel won’t get you too far. (except with kanicbird and msws)

RedFury answered better than me.

I realize your OP was mostly tongue-in-cheek, and seemed to address a better way for politicians to act rather than many policy specifics, but I really would love to read suggestions on the formation of a new political party. I think there are lots of “independents” out there who are political conservatives, and are also anti-racist, anti-sexist, anti-poverty, etc. In other words, people who know there are problems, know that some of them can probably only be addressed through some level of government, but also know that reality is complicated, and there are other options for solving problems than just waiting for the government to fix it.

It seems to me that the Republican party has become a hodgepodge of strange bedfellows with some pretty seriously conflicting beliefs (imagine what Ayn Rand would’ve thought about the religious wing of the right). I guess there are rumors that Sarah Palin is considering starting a party, which could be a home for people who want Christianity involved in politics. Mebbe, if she accomplishes that, the Republican party can re-energize on more pragmatic grounds.

I’m sure that there have been great discussions in GD about possible new political parties before. I’m a political newbie (as is probably obvious), and I only started reading the political threads here last August (when I finally admitted to myself that, by not voting and following politics, I was partly responsible for what my government had been up to). So I don’t know if it’s appropriate to start a new GD thread about a new political party.

That’s why I wanted you to do it!

Let’s say God is real. And when you die, you face him.

Most conservatives would be like “Hey, I followed the rules TO THE LETTER! No leeway for common sense in the Bible.”

That statement pretty much sums up conservative moral relativity in one neat package.

I’m up for it, Scorched Earth sounds like fun. I’ll bring the marshmallows.

That’s the fallacy called “appeal to fear.”

Otherwise, I agree with you, and would like to propose an alliance between SANE and the Norton Royalists.
